Is this normal?

if you run it with your finger there is no oily film but it does look like some residue. Any thoughts? 27,000 miles on my 2020. It has been regeared a while back. Front is the same just not as bad. I’m wondering if it’s the pinion seals starting to fail.

How long ago was it regeared and what kind of warranty did you get on the work?
Did they install new pinion seals?

I'm used to seeing that type of seepage on higher mileage vehicles, I tend not to worry about it until I see a puddle forming.

If that were mine, and the regear was still under warranty, I'd probably go ask the shop about it.

It was done last July. Only like 5k miles since then. Yes they installed new ones but maybe they tourqed something wrong? Or would this be improper pinion angle? I will call them Monday.

I’ve got a 22 Rubicon with 18,000 miles and noticed last week that mine looks the same way. Even shows a little seepage around the fill plug. Thing is, my differential has never had any work performed on it and no lift so I too was wondering if this was normal. Guess I should take it to the dealer?

If you don't have oil on you garage floor I would clean the oil off with a degreaser and see if it happens again. Check the oil level.

It's clearly not a dire emergency but consider when the warranty expires. If you have time, brake clean it, and watch for a month or so
