I recently got a MOPAR steel bumper for my JTR. As I’ve seen in other forums, I’m supposed to have the skid plate that goes with it. I have the skid plate that goes with the plastic bumper and be managed to attach like in the following images

it’s only attached via the bracket on the bottom. I’m not thrilled about only having the skid plate attached by 2 screws, but it’s not moving, it seems. It’s not too sketch is it?

I'm sure you can see but the one with the steel bumper attaches to those screw hole further up front as well. For on-road use suppose it's fine but I still wouldn't risk that thing coming off going down the highway either trashing your underside or worse hitting another vehicle. If you don't off-road then I would remove it for the time being until you get the correct one.

The most off-roading I do is fire trails and gravel. Not really any rock climbing.

I saw that it would attach to the other steel skid plate, and you’re right, I don’t want it coming off. Like I said, it’s bolted down, so I don’t think it’s going anywhere, I just want to be sure it’s not going to break anything as it currently sits.

Just get a three or four inch wide piece of 1/8” mild steel that’s long enough for the width of those bolt holes in the bumper. Cut it to size, paint it with bedliner or similar, and bolt it to both the bumper and skid. Worst case you’d need to drill a few holes in the skid.

Post in the WTB section in the marketplace or look in the for sales, plenty of people switching out to other bumpers that don't use the plate. I'd be worried about that thing bending the plate or the mounting tabs as well. Not sure what the weight of it is.

Edit: WILDOHOBO has a valid solution as well.

Would that work? It looks relatively cheap. Would removing the current brackets make it easier?

That’s a good call. I may just do that and see if someone would trade, too

As long as it’s a strong connection at both the frame horns and the bumper, it doesn’t mattter how you accomplish it. I agree, if you can find a take off, that’s an easy solution. I gave mine to another member a while ago. But bridging the gap with some metal would be pretty straight forward. It’s not body shop stuff. Cardboard template, cut some steel with a sawzall, bandsaw, or whatever is at your disposal, dull the cuts with grinder, metal files, anything, drill some holes, paint.

I think others have trimmed the skid plate so it can fit, check it out perhaps couple cuts with a hacksaw some filing and paint and you might be good.......Jack
