Decided I would change out the knee speakers this past weekend and all in all it was a simple task. Found a good video on youtube and the process was straight forward. Now.... I went with the Metra 6.5 pods and the DS18 Pro 6.5 speakers. Driver side pod went great, but the passenger side pod was a bit different. The magnet was too big for the enclosure. I got it in, but was not happy with it. Went ahead an buttoned everything up and was ready for some sound. DISAPPOINTMENT!!!! Now it is definitely louder, but you lose a good bit of your "boomy" bass. I was also getting a bottom out type sound. I am guessing the pods do not have suitable airspace for the speakers (also added poly fill in the process). Dejected but not down, I went ahead and purchased some Kicker two way 6.5s and reinstalled them the same day. I must admit...I am an expert at taking apart that dash now. Now the Kickers fit perfectly in the pods, but I got the same bottom out sound and same loss of bass. I told myself to give it time for break in and maybe it will get better. NOPE... Yesterday driving home I had enough. Pulled up and started at 4:30PM removing the 6.5s..... I reinstalled the OE pods with speakers (added poly as well) and at 5:45 I was back to having a bass filled cab. You would not think the ported pods make any difference, but you would be wrong like I was. I might try to swap in some DS18 4" in the near future, but for now I can relax with the sound I love.

What system do you have? Is it the premium Alpine (or whatever they call it) or standard? If it's standard the head unit may not have enough umph to push your aftermarket speakers. Or if it is the Alpine the resistance for that Alpine system is rated for 3 ohms. I believe most aftermarket speakers are 4 ohms. That could definitely be the difference in a good or crappy sound. For reference I installed the 6.5" Kickers and filled the pods with a ton of Kleenex and installed an amp to power said system. It sounds great IMO.

Maybe try the original pods with aftermarket 4" speakers?
Planning on that this weekend probably.... Got DS18s I had in my bar and switched them out when I went to 6.5s in those.
