How much did you extend your bumpstops? Your bump stops are going to determine the longest shocks you can use at full compression before things start to break

You also need to look at the front driveshaft and all of your brake lines, these are going to limit the extended length of your shocks. I know I have seen several people say 28" extended in the front is the max before you have driveshaft issues, and beyond 28 in the rear you need to address breaklines.

There are a lot of variables to consider and there’s no one size fits all. I buy shocks by compressed and extended lengths not by lift height. If you’re willing to tinker, you can maximize travel. If not, just go with something equivalent to what the company pairs with the lift you installed.

My lift 3.5” in front, 2” in the rear and this is my shock setup:

How about going with the lift manufacturer recommended shocks? They should offer several options. They’ve already done the research.

…unless you’re taking the coils off of the front of a 96 ford explorer for the front and ram coils for the rear.

Not sure why folks spend the $$$ on these vehicles and pinch Penny’s on an important system such as a suspension.

You give the manufacturers too much credit! This also ignores differences in overall vehicle setup and usage.

A perfect example of all of this is Clayton Offroad. Their 2.5" lift they recommend the Fox shocks designated for 2-3" , and for their 3.5" lift they recommend the fox shocks designated for 3.5-4" lift. Makes sense right? Not really.

Why the longer shocks on the 3.5" kit?

Because it's a bigger lift? Nope, remember the bumpstops are what limits up travel, and both kits use the same bumpstops.

The difference is the 3.5" lift comes with extended brake lines.

Well, since you brought up Clayton…yes their lifts run about +.5 by design and they’ve mentioned it numerous times on this forum.
