I am attempting to paint the wheel center caps orange. I painted them first with a product from home depot, didnt like the shade. I read on here people using racing orange matte, so I order a few of those. Used solvent to get the top layer off, sanded, washed it, repainted them.....

WTF happened here? 3 of them turned into a pumpkin overnight (for Halloween?):

Additionally, does anyone know a company that you would recommend for replacing these with a different style? I am not sure if they are a total loss, but maybe there are some aftermarket orange ones that I should consider.

Looks like lacquer on enamel (typcially incompatible) or just plain too thick coupled with a dry (or accelerated) heating environment. For a great finish that will last more than a year is spend $100 (or less) at a body shop to have them shoot whatever single-stage color followed up with a better than OEM clear coat.

The cost of shipped OEM replacements (those are toast) and materials already spent exceeds what it would have cost to have professional results.

:furiously sanding in the back ground:

This is my fun DIY project that I plan on making a lot of customization on. Im damn sure not going to let center caps be the thing that makes me break down and hire someone else to do it! haha

I agree that it looks like incompatible paints. Or, perhaps you did not wait long enough between coats for the solvent to flash.

Also, certain paints have to be second coated or top-coated within a certain time frame (typically within an hour) or you have to wait 24-48 hours for full cure to then spray again. Again, it has to do with allowing the solvent to flash or else it gets trapped under the top coat and ...... cracks. Check the cans for instructions.

What do we say to the God of Death?

Not today!

The other three are more bumpy and not as pretty as the first one... but I already had all the supplies and a little elbow grease was worth it to save them.

What did you end up doing differently?

Absolutely nothing outside of meticulously staring at it while it dried. I have no clue why the first batch screwed up. My very best guess is I put on a thick layer too soon.
