Locking Lug Nuts

Looking for opinions from those who've used the locking lug nuts.

I'm going to add locking lug nuts to my JTM but still trying to decide which ones are better.
Of course Jeep recommends Mopar standard style which I expect are top quality but I like the idea of the splined keyed nuts that I can put one on each stud instead of adding one per wheel but want to know if they're a good option.

Check out this vid, he tests different locking lug nuts.
Pretty much all could be defeated in a couple minutes.
There was one set that was the hardest to defeat.

Pretty much all could be defeated in a couple minutes.
There was one set that was the hardest to defeat.

Like they say, "Locks only keep your friends out".
If somebody wants em bad enough they'll get em.

I’ve got the Mopar ones on mine. Came with them so it was an easy choice. The one observation I have about lugs for our vehicles is that the Aftermarket ones I have seen, and I’ve unfortunately seen a number of them while trying to find good ones, all have significantly smaller seating surface areas than the OEM. While I have never seen an aftermarket fail as a result of the reduced size of the seating surface, they do not give me warm and fuzzies. I can’t imagine that Stellantis wouldn’t cut that corner to save on costs if they could get away with it. Because of that I am still on the hunt for a good set of black lugs that aren’t at the extortionate prices of the OEM black Mopar lugs.

In short, I’d probably order the OEM locking lugs and call it a day. There is a lot more meat to them and all of them can be defeated, some more easily than others.

makes sense.
more surface contact spreads the pressure out more.
It looks like the cheap ones with the softer material will round off easier too

I have the OEM locking lugnuts on mine as I got them here on the board for a song. After I added the spline type (every nut) on my trailer, I realized that they are not a 'special' eccentric spline spacing, but just a standard spacing, so common to every other of the same size. AND it is easy to buy a set of sockets to cover all of these.

Here is a visual of the difference in the contact area (blue area) between an OEM lug nut and an aftermarket lug nut that @Viper501 mentioned. I agree with him that if Jeep did not think the added contact area was necessary, they would not have gone in that direction. As always YMMV

The only plus side to the spline type is if the crooks don't already have a 'master' socket, those sets come in a 20 to a set vs. the 4 to a sets for most locks. So if they are hammering on a socket to remove the lug nuts, they will have to do that 20 times. The OEM locking lug nuts stick out future than you would think, so easier for 'criminal tool access'. I'll snap a photo tomorrow for reference.
Note-they spline lugnuts I am describing are the generic sets available on Amazon, not the specific 4-pack like on the above test video.

If I were buying new, I would consider the winner of the video review, Advanced Wheel Locks, shown in the first reply above. Gorilla and McGard also placed well. However, none of the wheel locks passed the welded nut test near the end of the video.
