The answer to "is a winch really necessary" -
Nothing is necessary with these few exceptions -
air
water
food
occasionally, shelter
Oh, and paying your taxes if you enjoy your freedom.
....and to some, a wench is apparently necessary.
but millions of people live every day with no winch.
Otherwise, what is really NECESSARY??
Handy, important, maybe are better terms. But even then - it's totally on what you do, where you go, how you do it and how you go there.
Even overlanding has different definitions. Some view that as one thing, some see it in other ways and would never use a winch.
