Hey gang,

I've been doing some research and I'm finding conflicting posts on how big of a USB stick we can use for playing music in one of the USB ports of our Jeeps.

I've seen people comment that 32GB is max, but I've also read folks who have used SSD/HD's with 500+GB working.

I tried my SSD and it just says "device not supported" or something along those lines.

Haven't tried a USB stick yet, but I was hoping for something around the 100GB range to be used.

I'm currently using my iPod Classic 160gb which has worked perfectly, but these cold WI days pretty much make it inoperable as it's THAT old and basically goes to restore mode as I'm sure the battery is pretty much nothing.

Thanks!

To further clarify, when you play music from the iPod the iPod is doing the work on reading the files and it's simply sending audio to the Jeep's system. So in that case, the file system doesn't matter to the Jeep.

I am reading that exFAT file system works as well and see a post on another forum by someone who is using a 2 TB flash drive with no issues.
Weird - I used that file system on an SSD and it did not work.

Uconnect read "disk error" or something similar...

Did the SSD have another power source? The vehicle USB "should" be enough but I haven't checked the ratings.

Nah, the SSD just came with the standard cord that plugs into the Jeep USB port.

Will keep trying to fiddle later today...

I'm using a 2TB thumb drive in my JT - I've read that some systems don't like to have all the files at the top level directory; move the files into folders and it's happy.

It's possible the USB port isn't capable of providing the amperage required for your SSD. They'll turn on and idle with relatively little power, but they may not be able to actively read/write with what the dash plugs can provide.

When it comes to power consumption, SSD's are totally different beasts than Flash drives. I doubt they had SSD's in mind when they designed the Uconnect system.

I’ve used a micro SD in a USB adapter with ok results. Music plays but menu system for the audio controls does not always operate correctly. I’ve resorted to just using Apple Music over CarPlay.

Well I picked up a 128gb sandisk from office depot.

Loaded all of my itunes library ana plugged it into the center console USB.

It was able to read the USB flash drive, but only plays the first song.

It does say it's building browse list and it could take some time due to the size of the files (70GB of music).

Will see if it actually does that...

Yeah still no luck. The USB plays one song and is forever loading an index list.

I can’t tell if it’s loading it when the Jeep is off or if I should keep it on acc mode and let it load the artist and such for a long stretch…

How did folks get 128GB to work in Fat32 mode?

Best clean the heads on that unit, I'd hate ta see it eat your favorite tape...
Not sure if it’s a problem with the unit. It’s reading the usb but the library appears to be too large for Uconnect to index….
