After three years of biding my time, I got a new 2023 Mojave in November that came with:
  • 33–Inch LT285/70R17C All–Terrain Tires
  • 17–Inch x 7.5–Inch Low–Gloss Black Machined Wheels (+$1,295)
I'm wanting to rotate all five tires myself, including the 5th wheel, but that wheel doesn't have a matching rim. I was just about to purchase a 5th matching rim - which I would have the tire installed to professionally - when I noticed that the purchase listing for the rim noted that there is no included TPMS Sensor.

So now I need to get educated.

  1. Do I need to get the sensor?
  2. Will the data display right if the car picks up 5 sensors?
  3. How much of a PITA is it to rotate five tires? (already seeming like a MAJOR one. No one who claims to rotate five tires ever mentions this)
  4. Can the cap come off this rim so the winch will fit through to hold the spare?
Any info would be really appreciated, thanks!

1- you will need to get a sensor at the dealer
2- the tire in the spare position will not display the psi. When you rotate that tire in it may take a few mile of driving to show up on the display
3- I don't find it a pita at all
4 - yes

I actually hadn't considered the TPMS either, and I have an OEM rim for my spare.

Is Jeep's sensor the only thing that will work? Does the factory spare have a TPMS in there? I guess I assumed the shop that put the tire on the new rim would have switched that over.

I have matching rims and do 5 tire rotations. The TPMS is detected without any problems on mine so far.

The factory steel wheel for the spare has no sensor. I got a set of the regular black aluminum Mojave wheels to have a matching spare, and Discount Tire put their sensor in it when the mounted the tire. Their price is competitive and they guarantee it for 6 years.

You do not have to go to the dealer for the TPMS sensor, you can if you want to though. Something to consider about the 5 tire rotation, if you off road the spare may take some scrapes and bruises. While I have not done a 5 tire rotation yet (debating on doing it now that I moved up to 37’s), when I first went to aftermarket wheels and 35’s, I mounted the spare “upside down” with the wheel face pointing up. I figured it would protect it better that way, so far so good but Discount Tire did mount the spare with the wheel face pointed down when I got 37’s recently. I will probably flip the spare before I go off roading, but then there is the chance of a weight being ripped off potentially, decisions…

This is the sensor I use for my 21 Willys. Build date 10/21. The build date is critical since FCA changed the tpms architecture mid model year in June of 21. Anything before that is not compatible with anything after. For whatever reason, discount tire replaced all 4 of my tpms sensors with thier house brand on my last tire purchase. They didn't work and I ended up buying new Mopar sensors to replace them myself. I suspect they used ones for the old architecture and I even told them about the change. Anyway, these will work on your 23

As stated above, you will need a sensor for the spare wheel. Your local Discount Tire location carries a variety TPMS sensor brands in stock and can even help with the 5 tire rotation. Tire rotations are one of the services we offer at no charge, and no purchase necessary! We are happy to help!

If you are in the Las Vegas area and near 7401 W Lake Mead Blvd, ask for Marty. He knows which sensors are which for our platform.

I munt the spare with the face downwards so I can check tire pressure periodically. What good is a spare tire that has lost its air over time? I tend to put the tire valve near the diff where it is least likely to get hit on the trail.

That is also a good point, something to consider for those without onboard air.
