What’s everyone’s thoughts on running non ms-12991 oil such as Amsoil signature series 5-40 with my jeep being deleted. To my knowledge the 12991 oil is required only due to it being low ash for the dpf but everything I can find online is saying it’s okay to run other oils once you’re deleted

Funny thing is MS-12991 is not low ash, but rather mid to full SAPS which is the opposite of what would be best for the DPF.

Just a theory here, but I think part of the reasoning for the switch from a low ash/emissions friendly oil on the Gen 2 to the new spec on the Gen 3 was for the additional wear protection with the higher ash content. Since the big problem encountered on the Gen 2 was bottom end failure, in addition to the bottom end redesign for the Gen 3 they also hedged their bets with a different oil recommendation. It's my opinion and theory that the factory decided they'd rather deal with warranty issues for shortened DPF life than replace engines.

All that aside, I guarantee you'll find plenty of people that will recommend using Amsoil in your diesel, regardless of whether it's deleted or not.

I foresee this quickly turning into another oil opinion thread with a shedload of UOA references. 😁

I'd rather replacing a DPF over bottom end rebuilt any day.
