I decided I didn’t like the doors hanging on the wall, and the top sitting on my home built cart (plus I wanted to be able to easily remove the top by myself).
The door cart was built with 2 large Harbor Freight furniture dollies (30 bucks for the pair) and 4 2x4x8‘s ($24.00)and CHEAP indoor outdoor carpet (8 bucks) total $62.00 plus some screws and staples.

You will notice some similarities between my hoist and a name brand out there.....

I did not like their winch....I wanted a stand alone electric with a nice long cored remote (Harbor Freight $169.00) fit the bill perfectly.

I did some reverse engineering from photos and modified the connections for the top. I don’t have to worry about using the HT bolts and possibly misplacing them.

I chose 5/16 inch clevis pins and clips....EASY! Top comes straight up, 2 bungies keep it from swaying around, and the Gladiator fits under it in the garage.
expenses on hoist.

Winch $169.00
Nylon Strapping $14.00 Amazon
metal grommet kit 9.99 amazon
2 8’ 2x4’s ($12.00) HD
2 Heavy duty 2” pulleys $$20.00 Amazon
Misc hardware approx 15-20.00
$245.00 total

I can pull and store top easily by my self, install it Easily by my self....it’s stored away safely and secure.

Not sure what trim you are talking about? I havent taken anything off the truck xcept the stock running boards to replace them with step boards.

just be careful with those pulley wheels. i had similar ones with claims they were capable of hoisting 500lbs used for a winch powered bike lift i made. maybe they are with some kind of thick rope like cable but with steel winch cable, they failed within a year of use and it turns out they are hollow inside so there isn't a lot of meat there. I ended up buying heavier duty ones to replace them. nothing terrible happened, i just noticed one day they were hanging up and not rotating. upon closer inspection i found 2 of 4 had broken.

These appear pretty decent, dual roller bearings inside a solid pulley. Thickness appears decent. Hell, they aren’t lifting 70 lbs, and there were rated at 800 each as gate rollers. I will keep an eye on them though, Thanks!

Its damn solid! I picked my 200 lbs ass Up like I wasn’t even there! The winch is rated at 1500lb horizontal pull, so 70-80 pounds of hardtop and attachments is nothing for it.

Looks like it works. On our JKU top, I use a wall mounted worm gear boat winch. I swapped the cable it came with for 700lb para cord.

Very observant. I did say it was very similar to a major brand. I Really liked their concept, but I like a few of my tweaks better.....and I like projects that work a bit better and cost less. J-Barr could have done what I did and I would have bought it from them. My hoist winch is way more user friendly, my strap connections are a bit (not much) faster and the whole thing was about 1/2 the price.

One note.....lumber will hav different densities from end to end, thus a mid point may not e a balance point.....there is a separate weight added to one end to make the empty bar balance to satisfy my OCD for things like that......it was only about 2 ounces, but it worked And made me less OCD about it.

I mean it in a complimentary way.

I actually like it being a padded wood bar where I get a little squeamish when the metal J-bar hits my top when I'm messing with.

We aren't talking about a lot of weight when it comes to these tops - homemade and wood is more then adequate.

The biggest rigging I did of mine was because my garage door opener was in the way of pulling straight up.

So I have a fixed distance (metal chain) handing straight down from celing holding the bar right above the roof. Then the hoist pulls it up at a 45 degree angle. So when the roof is pulled up it goes up and back toward the rear of garage in order to clear the garage door opener.

I get the rigging deal! I park forward, but have to back in to pull the top.....it’s the only way I could clear the garage door opener. It actually worked out measurement wise as I can pull forward right under the top and leave it hanging. I probably spent 2 hours measuring the truck, moving it in forwards and backwards to make sure I was going to land everything where it needed to be to actually work and hang where I needed it to. It all worked out pretty nice, I use one hand on the remote and one on the hoist bar to guide it up or down without touching a damn thing until it sits the alignment pins in place.
