I hear you - almost.........
I dealt with that for years until I got hearing aids and that greatly reduced that sound that actually caused me to not sleep, or want to scream sometimes.
Related to the original post here - my current hearing aids are programmable - by me, using either the buttons to choose a pre-programmed mode, or using my phone and an app.
One of the programs I came up with is to kill wind noise when driving and enhance voice when my wife is with me.
I can really dim the highway and wind sounds if it gets bad but the main program does a lot of that now, it's been tweaked "auto sense".
Not only that, but the bluetooth feature of the hearing aids means I use the JT only to see who is calling, I use the hearing aids for listening and talking on the phone. First time I tried using the truck system the other party said "maybe you should call me back, it sounds like it's raining there" LOL
I can be driving in a storm and use my hearing aids for phone conversation and they don't hear the background noise. No talking loud, no not able to hear them because of wind or highway sounds.
And it's helped the tinnitus a lot, too.
These have noise cancellation features I can bring in, modify, etc.
BUT it drives my wife nuts now because when I'm on my phone my wife has no idea who it is or what they are saying - only I can hear it! Makes her crazy not knowing.

As far as horns or sirens - naw, those come through as those aren't detected as "noise" by my hearing aids. Too much variation in those sounds. I suspect even my noise cancelling head phones would let some of that sound in - although in a jet you can't hear the engines at all - but again, that's a totally different sort of sound.
I can actually hear sirens BETTER with these hearing aids cutting the background din. That's what they filter - DIN, white noise, constant sounds.
I was in Publix one day happened to look at my blutooth options, and saw some guys hearing aids.!
It took EVERYTHING in me not to mess with him.

15 years? Tinnitus since 1970 from the 45 cal range.
Ya got me beat by 15-20 years. That's a heck of a long time, no hearing protection then? or was that just not a concern way back then?

Depends on the cause.
Nothing at all helped for my tinnitus other than hearing aids. It's a common syndrome with multiple causes.
Any solution with any basis or study is worth looking at because the reasons vary, so what doesn't work for one could well work for another.
The brain is a complex and amazing thing and even drug companies often say "it is believed that it works by xxxxxxxxxx" LOL It works but they have no clue why?!
Yea my hearing aids work best at handling it but damned if they are not going out on me. Not looking forward to buying another pair.

It would depend on the brand, I have a set of noise canceling headphones that once turned on it cuts all ambient noise 100%. Wihtout music playing, it is complete silence, except for my tinnitus, now if planes could make it so that the wireless ones work with the entertainment system, that would be ideal, lol
Didn’t know those were an option - and a great option for certain circumstances. Thanks for the info!

Medical devices have terrible security., Much of what is in hospitals networking protocols are custom made P
Hey now, Don’t act like the C-130 would be bad. Never in my life been put to sleep as fast as my flights on a C-130. That engine drone mixed with the vibration was like a lullaby. After you change your pants following the JATO of course lol
Sitting in the back of a deuce and a half going down long bumpy dirt roads to who knows where. Everybody sitting up, weapon between your knees, and sleeping.

I find that at about 78 the noise becomes louder than the voices in my head and I no longer have to listen to the shifty committee kind of refreshing......js

I would never since I used to sleep behind 8" Howitzers and play the bells in my head now 24/7, but the desire was there... I can`t lie.

I think a lot of us have a sort of ornery side and go through that "what if", or gee, this could be fun thing.

Bluetooth security is horrible on some things......... I suppose they believe that since there's no "data" to harvest, why bother? There are things in my house and garage that literally anyone could connect to with BT - no code required, find it and connect to it. Even the pH meter I use for my plating solutions has BT - and I turned that off.

I always unplug the bluetooth OBD adapter from my truck when I'm done making any changes. I mean the instant I'm done I disconnect from it and remove it from my truck and hide it away, and the security bypass cable comes out next - I don't even take the truck out of my garage with that stuff connected. If I have to reconnect 3 times to accomplish something, so be it. Call me paranoid........ whatever (it's not paranoia if the people you think are after you really are after you)

I can't even begin to imagine what you went through with all that going on around you........I know how it's impacted a couple of friends who were marines.

You are not wrong for doing this.
I have a degree in IT and trust nothing IT related.
Want to see IT at work, and the flaws Therein?
Go to Spiceworks > become a member > be highly concerned.

I was network security admin for an agency of the State of Iowa. I took over for the senior network administrator when he retired. Full responsibility of all endpoint and network security.
The only issues ever found were on IT staff computers (yeah, they are the worst) and some in the financial department responded to phishing emails a couple of times and I got alerts on that and contacted their manager immediately.
Even when I ran computer/network anti-malware at Principal Financial the only issues were caused by IT staff - help desk and the web team - and company officers)

The issues are poorly configured or set-up computers/devices/software and HUMANS.

Before we retired, we used Spiceworks software for ActiveDirectory reporting and change control. I'm SOOO glad I'm not there any more. Good to be retired. I can imagine the issues when covid hit a year ago and everyone wanted to work from home - setting up hundreds of VPN devices and everyone wanting it NOW.
