12 ply tires at 40 PSI on a mid sized truck is bonkers! Considering 37 psi on stock tires is what's recommended, and those are load C. Empty on street you should be at 30. I run 31-33 on my load D 35"s.
Not completely bonkers. Mines goes up to 37 or so and is comfortable but my “normal” load is a little higher than most. It really depends on what you carry with you on a daily basis and what the roads are like where you normally drive that determines if it’s bonkers or not. Mine gets up to 37-38 and with the bedcap and hauling everything I need to possibly change out a tire to include a badlands 3 ton jack and it’s pretty comfortable. If he runs an aux fuel cell, tools, jack and all that on the regular he’d need the extra psi to run comfortably. These threads are always subjective and only give a starting reference point. What I carry with me the next guy doesn’t so our psi reqs are going to be different.

Bonkers? How so? Maybe you need more info…like you I live mostly in the desert and usually roam out with just me and the dogs. 12 ply MT tires can handle a ton of nasty dirt, rock, brush and trails. Not just the easy endless miles of gravel roads, but really rough environment stuff and bring me home, Every time. (Knock on wood) The 6 ply sides walls and the 12 ply carcus has handled everything I’ve ever thrown at them. Not a single side wall slice with lots of miles on razor sharp shale rock, loose and deep. This environment is my normal. The lowest pressure I‘ve put them at was 10lbs, it was a ex river bed in a steep rock walled canyon that was deep loose sand I remember it to have been about a 20 mile ride. The 6 ply side walls handled it easily, without any roll offs. I did few of my early years with the forest service, this was the go to tire type for all there vehicles. Highway, hauling with excessive weight in the rig or trailering a heavy load, put 50 to 70 psi in the rears and those tires with that pressure really help control the load at a moderate speed. Attached pic is point in case, this was an emergency tow of my sons truck that died 40 miles back in elk hunting, put on the WDH and 65 psi in the rears, smooth sailing all the way home. The only thing you have to get use to is at 40 psi, empty bed, in town or on the highway it can get a little bouncy with ruff pavement. I have airbags in the rear coils that allow me to fine tune it for cargo weight differences.
This is a truck, I treat it like one, I haul, I tow, and I wheel it. Wouldn’t change anything on my tire selection or pressure. I don’t fret about these tires and pressure taking and bringing me back home.
