Tire load rating

I have a question about load ratings on tires. Looking at 2 options for some big and it’s either c2 or d2. I understand that it’s a rating for sidewall ply equivalence. I don’t have any real world experience with load indexes. Either should handle the payload of a gladiator. What reason other than tougher sidewall is there? Would it change the ride? I usually run 28 lbs.
