Also explained that if you called somebody in like the next county or outside a large metro area from your home, it was long distance charges and sometimes actually writing/mailing a letter or driving over to talk to them in person was cheaper.

Whenever the teacher wheeled that in, that usually meant they were nursing a hangover and did not want to deal with the lesson plan for the day.
