I had no idea. I'm probably the last to know.

Plastic molded over a metal substructure. Another video floating around where someone cut one open. They talked about how the vast majority of the suspension loading is carried by the lower control arms and not the upper on a IFS. Reasoning is the ball joints tend to go first anyways and the arm is changed as a whole in most applications to begin with.

Which-ever control arm the spring sits on is the load carrying arm. The other just holds things in alignment. Same with cars, trucks, whatever. You know which ball joints will go first, even control arm bushings, based on the arm the spring rides on.
Some upper ball joints will seemingly last forever...........
Look at the lower control arms of early mustangs and others - stamped steel, nothing to them. The uppers much more beefy.
