We have ran it many times and we too are headed there tomorrow O-dark thirty. Just be watchful of who is coming down from the switchback on the shale road. If I see folks coming down I will wait at the pull out on the uphill side and letem by.
Let me know how it goes, I'll be there Tuesday

Heading their Sunday or monday (8/3 or 8/4) any feedback back on what time to get there (going east to west seems easier option) or conditions?

Is the fire causing any issues with trails near by?

Going west to east wasn't bad at all. No fires impacted us. The Gunnison fire is far north of Ophir and the Alpine loop

Watch Duty is a great app for monitoring fires and getting emergency alerts

You should have no problem running either direction but eastwards is considered the easier way. Going to be a hit or miss with traffic. On one hand Imogene is closed so vehicles have to come in via the highway unless they do Black Bear which could result in more traffic. It's a crapshoot honestly but I would figure it won't be too bad. You can see well down the pass from just past the summit so you can plan accordingly.

We did it about a year ago and found Ophir to be one of the easier passes to drive, it's not a technical road but requires attention.

It's a high-consequence road, like most in the area. I'm also told my internal metric for shelf road pucker factor is broken, social media loves to freak out over roads like this or the Schafer Switchbacks in Moab, but those roads don't bother me.
Good descriptions in my opinion.
