Im getting ready to replace the rockers and lifters. I'm getting the notorious ticking from the passenger side. I know I may have to change the cam's as well, but seeing how I am limited on funds at the moment, I'm going to start with the rockers. Are these good quality or should I be getting different ones? They seem really cheap.

Thanks for any help.

I'd go with Melling, just my take. No wishing and hoping with that brand.

So... did they remove the VVL on these engines? Did they go back to only a VVT? I don't think they did.

I think those are the wrong ones. Unless your 3.6 in your gladiator is different than in my JL Wrangler. Mopar Parts Giant is OEM parts. As far as I know, there are only OEM parts available at this time.

Here is my story on the topic:

But notice the rocker looks way different than the one in the link you provided.

I am pretty sure you need: (But please double check)

I'm 85% sure its the VVT. Ill check it tonight.

Why is there such a huge price difference in the rockers. The price i had quoted out went from being around 50 bucks to $684.00!

I also found these on ebay.

Thoughts?

Its going to be both... and your cam shaft is going to be toast. No use replacing one and not the other.

Don't forget the air intake gaskets (at least uppers)as you will want to swap those. And don't forget a new valve cover gasket...

You will need some coolant too.

And this tool. https://www.amazon.com/CTA-Tools-12...cphy=9211229&hvtargid=pla-1652871327118&psc=1

It HAS to be the aluminum one with the VVL. The plastic kits that cost $10 will not work. You may be able to find the above tool cheaper however.

VVT is variable valve timing.
VVL is variable valve lift.

The old 3.6 (VVT ONLY) would wear out lifters / rockers so much that the aftermarket groups made lots of parts to solve the issue. The issue was different for that engine. The roller would get sloppy. Super common repair.

For some reason, there are no aftermarket parts available yet for this new engine. (VVL and VVT)

My neighbor is a Chrysler mechanic and has replaced 100's of passenger side intake / cam / lifters with this new design.

The parts are on constant backorder from Mopar. Yes, they are a fortune. Its really sad.

Here is another thread.

If you look at my pictures, you will see the cam shaft is totally shot.

Please confirm this! I don't have a good way to show you, but Jeep added VVL in 2016. I highly doubt they removed it. I am amazed that no one else is speaking up here. You should join the Wrangler forum.

Pentastar upgrade
[edit]
For 2016, FCA released an updated version of the 3.6 L engine. This engine features upgrades to the variable valve timing (VVT) system, two-stage variable valve lift (VVL), a new intake manifold, new valve springs, new piston rings, new fuel injectors, new ignition coils, a cooled Exhaust gas recirculation system, lower internal friction and lower weight. It also features a higher compression ratio, increased from 10.2:1 to 11.3:1. These improvements increase power as well as efficiency,[12] however the new version no longer supports flex-fuel capability.

Here is the actual sticker from the jeep. I looked through the manual and couldn't find anywhere where it started VVT or VVL. Just on this sticker.

Kind of amazed myself no one else has said anything. Maybe I should ask on Reddit.

Edit: Now that I'm looking at that sticker. I'm a little worried. The interior says cloth bucket seats, but they are vinyl/leather seats. If they made that mistake, did they make another one on the engine?

How did this go?
Unsuccessful. Took me half a day just to get to the valve cover, when I finally got it off. Two of the intake rockers were bad and had shaved the down the cam pretty horribly. We were moving to one state over in 3 days and I didn't feel comfortable removing the timing chain and replacing the cams. So I figured I would just tow it behind the U-haul. Nope. U-haul doesnt allow Jeeps to be towed behind their moving trucks. Same rule goes for the 3 other moving companies. So my only option was to drive it 175 miles. We made it 3/4's of the way before the check engine light came on, but we pushed on and thankfully it made it. Now it sits in my driveway as I am waiting on my 401K to be released so I can put it in the shop. Which should be any day now.
I'm 99.9999% sure, they are going to have to replace the engine. If that is the case. I was thinking about asking them just to put a V-8 in it. Or at least ask how difficult it will be and expensive.
I attached a couple of photos to show you what everything looks like. Oh here is like the cherry on top. I was going to do an oil change before we left, just so it would have some fresh oil. Well the people I took it to last time ( which I never do. I always change it myself) , put the oil plug back in with an impact wrench. I stripped the bolt trying to get it out. So since that was a no go. I figured well might as well atleast change the oil filter. I cut it in half and put a magnet to it, just to see how much metal was going through..... Well you can see how much is in there, lol.
All in all Id say this has been a complete nightmare, lol. Thanks for asking though.
