Guys, I’m strongly considering an overland but the more I think about it’s lack of off-road capabilities (maybe I’m wrong?), the more I start to feel I’m not getting the best bang for my buck. Am I wrong in feeling that the Overland is not meant to take off-road or is that just the perception I’m getting right now? At the end of the day, it’s a 4x4 jeep so initially I was feeling it’s meant to be on trails, maybe just not rock crawling, but what about some easy intermediate type of trails?

Also, are there any good overland builds to look at on this forum?

And lastly, I’m not considering the sport level trims because I‘m an older dude and I’ve done my fair share of time with cloth seats and leather is the only way to for me these days. Factory installed leather that is.
Other than the Rubicon models (and up), you don't lose much off-road ability with the Overland. I'm on the road 99.99% of the time anyway, so that's what's important to me. Plus, it was cheaper with all the options that I was adding than a souped-up Sport-S. And, if you want to modify the heck out of it, you're still free to. I'm also an old guy, but it's cloth all the way for me! :)

I think its great you know what you want to do with the truck. I bought mine as a daily driver that could separate the "gassy" stuff from the cabin, pull a 4500LB trailer and do some light 4X4. The diesel, 373 gears and standard 18" rims (tire are ~31" tall) work nicely together and fit my needs well. If you are planning on having large tires be careful to match the gearing - lots of people here can help. It is trail rated but I don't have any illusion it will compete with the suspensions of the Rubicon or Mojave. And its also not a great truck per se - but, wow, it is fun to drive! And empty I get 26mpg.

I used to not like leather seats - then my wife bought a Jeep with leather........ hmmmm....... nice in the cold weather to have them all warmed up. The negative - in the JT you don't get cooled seats so they can be HOT in the summer. But then I have a WJ with cloth seats - it's 16+ years old, 128,000 miles and in good shape. A tad faded, perhaps, but hard to tell with the gray color - not stained. I HATE stained, dirty seats.

My Overland as it sits now:
max tow springs under the rear to prevent some of the sag with a load
Rubicon (the lighter numbered Rubicon springs, likely off a lightly optioned Rubicon) up front take out a touch of the rake - and to support the winch and skid plate (and now, steel bumper) was adding.
I added 3/4" spacers all 4 corners as the max tow springs sat a tiny fraction of an inch lower than the stock Overland springs, and because the bumper, skid plate and winch dropped the front about 1/2".
I put on Falken A/T Rubicon tires in the winter season.
It's now pretty much fully optioned other than the aux switches as I've added passive entry and auto high-beam option. I don't think you could order them with much more than what I have now (at least not when I ordered in Oct 2019)
I MAY - MAYBE - will add quick-disconnect sway bar links but then around here I ask myself - why?

I’m a happy owner of one. 5K miles on it most of it obviously in everyday roads, we have take it to easy trails mostly high water and mud, swamp as well as snow during a Christmas trip. Excellent while off-road, even pulled out another car from the snow ditch. I only changed the tires as the stock ones are definitely not good for off-roading.For being my everyday car, commuting and long trips very good and also able to off-road? No problem on my opinion.

Great to hear a common theme from everyone on here with an Overland. Sounds like it is in fact well-equipped to take on some 4 wheeling but it’s not going to be a huge burden to drive into work.

I’m curious to know what tires you swapped in and how that changed your overall ride quality on paved roads.

SHEESH! What’s going on with that paint bro?! Just well polished or repainted?

Also, what size are your wheels and how’s the ride quality on that lift with those tires?

Ride quality is great. The tires make it a little less smooth than stock. The paint looks different in different light, but with that wall behind it and being in direct sunlight it looks extra glossy. On a cloudy day it is almost plain grey looking.

Looks great, how’s the ride quality on those 33’s? Take it on any trails yet?
I have only had it for a month, the ride is "Jeeplike". It's a badass in the snow, I want to take it to Moab and try some of the easy/moderate trails in the future. For now I'm looking forward to getting to summer and getting the top and doors off and doing some Jeep runs

Not planning to rock crawl much at all, sounds like you’re a happy overland owner. I don’t want to make many changes aside from a lift and 35’s, won’t be much else I’ll want to change
I choose the Overland over all of them. I have a 2018 Wrangler Sport 2 dr. and 2020 Gladiator Overland. The reason I bought the Overlamd is because of Leather and nice wheels among other things. I had no use for the Rubicon features. I added BFG 285/70X18 T/A K/O.....they are 10 ply which I would rather had Standard load but they don't make a Standard load in that size. Or BFG don't. I also added the leveling kit to the front and a Bed Cover and I'm done......Love the way it drives......

Well, I guess I better chime in.
The Overland is capable!

I have an Overland. Got it in June 2019. Put a MOPAR lift on in August 2019. Starting taking in offroad in July 2019. I've been on Easy trails, intermediate, and hard trails. The underside of my JT looks like taco meat. I've been through two sets of wheels. I tow my 16' trailer with ATVs, I tow a boat, and I tow our RV. It's got scratches, dents, and dings from offroading.

Again, it's an overland. No lockers, manual quick disconnects, and stock 3.73s. I've been offroading since I was 16. I've owned two RAMS, 2 Broncos, and 2 rangers, and a Toyota. I've never had lockers. I just pick a line and drive!

I started making videos after awhile. You can check out my youtube channel: https://youtube.com/c/ChangeYoLife

I'm not bragging. There are a million others out there that have done more than I have with less. I'm just one out of a million. I just want you to understand that the Overland is very capable. You just can't be afraid to go!

People like you just keep making me feel better and better about my own choice.

I assume the MOPAR 2" lift - which tires? and which disconnects for the sway bar links?
