I remember wheeling my Xterra for nearly 15 years with Jeep and Toyota guys (and trying to find decent aftermarket support)

That was the only thing I hated about my 2010 Xterra. The lack of aftermarket support. It was one of the best vehicles I’ve ever owned otherwise.

In most ways it was superior to the Tacomas I wheeled with - I never once broke a CV, the frame was tougher and more rigid, and the whole thing was still somehow 30% cheaper for equivalent year and mileage.

I had a 2009 Frontier before that and it was a good vehicle too. They’re basically the same thing, but the Frontier had a horrible turning radius, the Xterra did not, and the Xterra was a lot better off-road. Better traction and more maneuverable.

A long wheelbase does do that

The front wheels just don’t turn as sharp though. I’m not sure if you’ve we’ve driven a 2nd gen frontier, but the turning radius is worse than any modern vehicle I’ve driven. Truck, car, suv, etc. the gladiator has a much longer wheelbase and turns considerably sharper and is a lot more maneuverable. I’ve had full sized trucks easier to park in tight parking lots than that frontier. The gladiator has much better F/R weight distribution too.

The wheels have the exact same lock-to-lock ratio and angles as the Xterra sister vehicle, the difference in turning circle between the two is entirely down to the wheelbase.

You’re right that the X is pretty nimble on the trail, it’s a nice mid-length wheelbase that balances agility and stability.
