Problem with UCONNECT and IPHONE 8 with IOS 13

Just picked up this vehicle Monday, and because of working nights and the bad weather in upstate NY, haven't had much of a chance to really give it a shake down. However, I have encountered a few issues involving the Alpine system and Uconnect. Most hands free systems will mute the radio when selecting the voice command to make a phone call, this one does mute the front speakers but the back ones continue to broadcast meaning I end up having to shout to be sure of the command being heard. Is this normal behavior for this system? Which brings up the second problem, more often than not, it does not understand the command for making a phone call, even if I mute the radio so there is no background noise, I just keep getting the message that it doesn't understand the command. Then at other times, it repeats that it is downloading the phonebook, the other day it took 10 minutes to do it. This book has only 100 contacts if that, in my 2 other vehicles, it takes no more than maybe thirty seconds if that. Finally, I get distortion from the bass, mostly it is clipping. Even when I turn the bass down below the mid-point, it will sound like it would if there was a bad connection. It is intermittent, which makes ti hard to isolate as to whether it is a particular speaker or more than one. It is going into the dealer already because of these issues, but when I talked to service about this, they acted like they had no clue and weren't sure what they could do. That's why I am asking the question here, to get any history that someone else may have experienced so when I go in there, I can give them some direction, or at least, know that I am not alone with all or any part of these issues. I have done a soft reset which accomplished nothing. Thanks ahead of time for any help.

Start with a new USB cable to connect the phone to the Uconnect system. It is very picky about the quality of the cable used. I had issues from the very beginning that were solved with a new cable. After six months of use, random errors started showing up. A new cable fixed it again.

For calling with my iPhone, I press and hold the voice command button for a second which activates Siri. A simple tap gets you the Uconnect voice command. Siri usually works just fine. The mic in the truck is prone to wind noise at speed. It is worse than my JK. Most of my voice commands are for the phone so I don’t have much practice with the Uconnect to remember how it dims the audio when listening for commands.

IIRC, the menus are also broken apart and only certain options are available to you based on where you are in the Uconnect hierarchy. On my JK, for example, you can’t have the navigation ā€˜repeat guidance’ to replay your next turn instruction while you are in the radio part of the command tree. That won’t be understood. This may not be your issue but something to bear in mind.

I think the idea of voice command is great. This implementation needs more improvement imho. Eyes on the road, hands on the wheel. Don’t make me look at the screen to try to find out if the picky little option I need is there. It also needs to be completely documented. My research found the online videos but they only show some very short examples. I personally would like an exhaustive document covering all the commands and structure.

and I have yet to find out if I can have it repeat my next turn instruction in the JT 8.4 system.

EDIT: it is the ā€œtravel infoā€ feature that works on my JK but not the JT. I’ve been using Siri for nav that I’m out of practice with Uconnect.

Sorry for the digression. If any of these ramblings don’t help, I’d suggest taking it to the dealer. You may have a bad mic or need a radio reflash.

good luck

Appreciate the response, appears I am going to have to sit down with the manual and play with it before I waste time taking it into the dealer.

I just got this distortion and I was listening to XM Radio. I was adjusting the bass on the eq, and the entire thing started to fuzz out.
I tried power off/on, and I also walked away from the truck (went into a store to shop) for about 30 minutes -- STILL doing the fuzz.

I'm going to let it sit overnight and if still a problem, I will have to take it in to get looked at.... Ugh.

So, I left it alone (actually about 1.5 days) and it is working fine now. Ghost in the machine I guess.
