Replacing Front Axle Shafts - Any suggestions ?

so far I’m installing Reid racing knuckles, dynatrac ball joints, Front & Rear axle artec truss, and Dana 5.13s but my question is what front axle shafts should I go with ? I’ve heard people say chromoly front shafts and others mention RCV. Thanks !

A Dana 60 is like $7k plus I think

RCVs front and Dana Spicer rear axle shafts will be making their way into my axles before throwing on some 38x13.5s. I will be upgrading the front brakes as well to powerstop Z36 pad/rotor combo (rear rotors/pads are brand new after an axle seal replacement). I'm already regeared to 4.56 and though I'd like to be at a 5.13 I don't plan on changing that out right now.

Regarding price... Axle shafts ~ $2000, gears ~$2400 (installed), brakes ~$300 for fronts. Total ~ $4700. Make it 5k if you truss. That's still cheaper than buying just a front dana 60 axle. A 38" tire may be getting to the limit of an advantek 44 axle but driver style has more to do with making it last at that point. Someone that likes the skinny pedal and hops up rocks is going to find the breaking point well before the low n slow approach.

RCV axles in the front. Had them in my Power Wagon. Don't think that you will ever break one. I've tried.

Ok $5000, you could have sold your axle for easy $2500 complete and got a built ECG D60 delivered for $8k. DIY maybe less. Yes other parts like rims etc are needed but if your going to play hard or carry a lot of weight like many overlanders do then IMO better off with 60's.

Yea...5k for both axles or 16k + wheels - 5k for dealing with reselling your old axles. So still more than double the expense.

I get it, some people have the means to dump tens of thousands of dollars into a rig. Others are casual offroaders that need a daily driver they want to be able to have fun in. Its just not even close to say for the expense of axle shafts you might as well buy a D60.
