It’s because I’m an amateur. SortExped mat on top is the way to go. There's a few companies who will make you a custom foam mattress but it's just added weight up there and adds minimal comfort. Most tents can only handle an extra couple inches at most (because 2" more mattress means 4" when folded) and then you can't keep bedding up there.
The Exped is light weight and folds nearly flat. Had zero issues keeping it, two full pillows, a double bag, and a quilt in my Tepui when I had it.
