I have a Body Armor RTT. I purchased it used along with the rack. This tent and every other that I see opens on the drivers side or passenger side. Is there a reason none are set up to open towards the rear? I know some has some aerodynamic reasons but this is just a square box.

Called the manufacturer and they had no info on this question.

If I can have it open to the rear of the bed I can have an overhang that will provide some shade when the tailgate is down.

Thoughts?

A few years back there was a guy on the Wrangler forums, that did exactly what you are talking about. He just modified his rack so that the tent could mount in that different orientation.

Not sure which tent you have but I suspect that manufacturers do it this way to maximize the open footprint while keeping the closed footprint minimal. So having it open to the side means they can have it longer making the opened bed wider…if that makes sense.

And while the model you have may be square they may have other models like I’m describing, so now they can standardize the manufacturing process.

Edit: Looking at Desert Armor's RTT's, none of them are perfect squares, so if you were to turn it sideways so that it opens to the rear, you will be rather "wide" and overhang the sides by a fair bit.

I ran my RTT on my Tacoma that way it was perfect. I sold that tent and switched to a Wedge style that is a lot easier to setup and takedown since buying my Gladiator. Not all tents would work for this but the soft canvas type I had from ARB worked well. I liked that I could open it up and it created a small sheltered space under it. It was low but I am short so not an issue.

Similar to what the Wrangler guy had done. Thanks for the pic!.

Yeah, it looks like some of the tents that you used to be able to do this with like the CVT's and Tepuis are now not quite so square anymore. The ARB's seem do be more dimensionally square still compared to the others.

I did a quick search and it looks similar to what I have. Different brand but same concept.

You may just have to rotate the rails under the tent 90 degrees.

Each rail should have two 10mm bolts on either end that are found under the mattress.

That is exactly what I want to do. I'm on 38s with a 6in lift so walking under it will not be a problem. Thanks for taking the time to post the pic.

No worries, a friend has a full size Tundra and set his up like this. The Tundra sits high enough that he is able to attach the annex room under the tent which is pretty nice to have for somewhere to change clothes or whatever.

The fundamental design logic of the RTT opening and ladder entry to the side instead of the back is that you can't open the back door of an SUV. So while this works for a pickup truck they design to the lowest common denominator of the buying market.

But nothing wrong with rotating the mounting direction to suit your needs.
