RTT without a rack

After a few short overlanding trips trying to find flat, dry ground that doesn’t have hip deep weeds and grass I need to find a different solution than my gazelle ground tent. I still want to use my bed to store stuff and I want it covered. I’ve looked at all the usual available options and think they seem to be to inconvenient or to expensive.
I’m thinking of just using a solid piece of plywood with some framing underneath and somehow mounting an RTT on that. Will I need to mount bars on top? If I do can I use unistrut?
Also I’m leaning toward the Smittybilt Overlander. Does anyone has an alternative they would recommend over the SB at that price point?
