I had Mopar 4:88's installed in my Rubicon by a local Jeep dealership. Before I left the parking lot the auto start stop threw a warning light and became inoperable. I called the dealership and they assumed it was the auxiliary battery and told me I would need to bring it back and let them have it for 4 hours to test the battery and if/when it was bad they could replace it under warranty.

Fast forward a month and I drop it off to receive a call letting me know they have programmed the 4:88's but every time they start it and pull it out of the shop the auto start stop issue pops back up. When they go back into the programming it has changed back to 4:10's. They let me know I can come pick up the truck and they will work with Jeep to get new code and call me back when they get it.

Two weeks later (last Monday) I take the truck back as they now say they need to regional Jeep guy here so they can connect the system up and work with Jeep as they cant figure out what is going on. I was in the area (today Friday)so I popped in the dealership to see if they had made in progress. Here is where it gets FUN!!!

I have now been informed that you can not put 4:88's in a Rubicon because the rear diff has some air sensor in it and now that they have done both the rear and and front end both axles need to be replaced along w/ the transfer case. They informed me this is only an issue with Rubicon and that if I had a sport or Mojave no big thing. At this point I have no truck, no idea what resolution looks like and scratching my head as to how the heck this is even possible.

Please dont shoot the messenger as I am only sharing what I have been told. Please do share if you have a Rubicon, had a dealership install 4:88's and if you are not having the same problem would really appreciate a PM with your dealership name so I can have mine call yours and compare notes.

All that said I really dont want to go back to 4:10's so need to start looking at other axles as a potential resolution. Thanks in advance for any guidance, positive input or good natured go buy a Ford smack talk as it is all appropriate about right now.

Unless something is seriously different on the JTs, I’m confused why regearing necessitated reprogramming the computer. When I regeared my JK there was no programming needed - that was only necessary when I changed tire sizes.

That is crazy. Weird to for Im sure there are others with 4.88 or even deeper???

I have a Sport so no real info other than I do have 4.56 and running 35's, I know your running 37's. I guess I was throwing that out there and curious if you could run those in stead?

From what the service manager said it is 4:10's or nothing due to the air sensor that is built in and programmed for 4:10's and 4:10's only.

What is this “air sensor” that only accepts 4.10s?
This smells like total horseshit.
I’d message JeepCares and find another dealer if possible. Maybe they can somehow reimburse you for what’s been screwed up

Did you drive the truck at all with 4.88s? I see you fast forwarded a month, so I'm confused. Is the only issue the auto stop/start warning on the dash?

Speedometer would be off on older vehicles They used to have a different gear for the cable for each different gear ratio of the differential.
Otherwise it's thinking it's going one speed and is actually going another. Changing tire size changes the engine RPM for a certain road speed - so does changing the gear ratio.

However, vehicles that sense speed at the wheel and not the driveshaft, that's a different matter. Then it's only tire size that matters to them.
In that case it's counting the rotations of the wheel over a given time and calculates how fast it's going by the circumference of the tire. Gear ratio won't matter.

Yes I drove it for just short of 1000 miles and the only issue I had was the auto start stop. They are telling me it is just a matter of time until and I quote "it burns to the ground"

Over a gear swap????
Dozens of members have swapped gears in every JT level, Sport, Rubicon, even Overland.

Tell them 'cool, I will come back to you for having installed something that made it burn to the ground'

I am wondering if it is actually an air sensor or if they are talking about the lockers. Would like to think they know what they are talking about but at this point I am not sure what to think.

I would think so. Hoping someone on this forum with a Rubi has encountered the same thing and come up with a viable fix. A titch concerned as Jeep seems 100% willing to give me a loaner and cover the cost to replace the axles for as long as it takes which tells me they believe what they are telling me. I am definitely in the trust but verify stage :)
