Running Boards vs Side Steps

What is the difference between running boards and side-steps that run the entire length of the doors? Specifically these two?

So far I have gathered that the Running Boards are steel wrapped in plastic. The SideSteps are powdercoated aluminum. According to Quadratec the Running Boards are 47lbs and the SideSteps are 14lbs, so the materials look to check out, as the steel rock rails weigh 95lbs (combined).

What does the steel in the Running Boards offer? Surely they aren't as durable as the rock rails given being wrapped in plastic?

Biggest thing I don't like about running boards is that snow piles up on them and ot is more difficult to clear. Had them on my '02 & '07 Avalanche. Going with N-Fab rails with steps 0n the Rubicon.

If you a truly going to do some offroading in your Gladiator stay away from those to. I want to go with a true steel fabricating company like evo, jcr, road armor. They will be a little heavier but they will hold up and look a lot better.
