Wow the number of responses in here has been amazing! A bunch of people had questions about that ‘6X’ that we use here and on our website, which is perfectly valid - we wouldn’t want to spend our money on a product that doesn’t work either!!

Here’s some insight into why we use ‘6X’:

Those of you who have mentioned trying to throw rocks at the windshield is actually not so far off of how we do our testing! We have a highly controlled environment where we basically take a steel ball that is the representative size and weight of a rock that would get kicked up from the tires of a vehicle in front of you, and shoot it at glass windshields at different speeds and temperatures. We do this multiple times, and then look at what percentage of the shots led to windshield breaks for a regular windshield versus a windshield protected by ExoShield. What we found through all our testing was the ExoShield-protected windshields were 6 times less likely to break at highway speeds compared to unprotected windshields.

Although it’s difficult for us to share the details of the experiments and results within this forum - we just don’t have the data laid out in a way that is easy to share/communicate - but based on all the interest here, we’ll work with our engineering team to put something together for our website that we’ll share here once we have it ?
So you may not have that kinda data and have to get with engineering for it, but can you give us a round about price on what the dealers should charge so we know if we are trying to get hosed? Noticed that you didn’t reply to that comment? That should be an easy one and not require any engagement with engineering. Thanks

At what angle is the windshield when you hurl your balls of steel at it?

A Jeep JT windshield isat a much steeper angle. No glancing blows here!

6x is going to be in a controlled manner with, and a guess here, a windshield at a regular car’s degree of slant?

does this make sense?

It sure would have been easy to drop a YouTube video of the testing.

Does the test account for a vehicle moving forward at 70mph and the rock having been kicked up and flying back at let’s say, conservatively, 45mph?

Now, what I like a lot about ExoShield is how they are handling the questions, jesting, and grilling.
Their professionalism makes me intrigued in the product.
Our tests actually do account for the flat & steep glass of the Jeep windshield! Since this is probably the "harshest" condition (the Jeep windshield is essentially a rock chip magnet as you know) this is what we use for testing. That means that for some windshields that are at a very steep angle and highly curved, it could in theory be higher than 6X.

I agree - I would love to put together a YouTube video of some of our testing :) It's something we can definitely work on.

As far as the speed - also yes! While the glass we're shooting at is not moving during the test - which could cause a bunch of other inconsistencies in testing - we do account for the relative speed (we've probably spent more time thinking about the physics of rocks flying towards a windshield than any human ever should ?).

Oops yes I'm sorry about that! Please bear with me through this answer because it's a little long ?.

For a shop that specializes in Jeeps or tends to service a lot of Jeeps, the average pricing is typically between $250-299 on the low end, up to maybe $450 on the higher end. That being said, when we first launched the product several years ago, we gained a lot of popularity with shops who work primarily on rare & exotic vehicles, in which case there is a lot of care and labour (not to mention insurance) that goes into that installation job - which can mean that the price is as high as $1200+ (for some people this makes sense because their windshield is literally impossible to replace).

As we're interacting more with the Jeep community, we're working on making finding an appropriate installer easier by adding partners to our network who actually specialize in Jeeps and figuring out how to label these on our website so that it's easier for you to find. We're also working on something that would make the installation even easier for pretty much anyone to do on a Jeep - hopefully we'll be able to announce something on that in the next few months!

I hope that answers your question! With products where there is a labour component it is very difficult for us to give a firm price since we want to respect our installers' time and labour costs - but I can also understand that this is frustrating for the buyer!

That's something we've actually been working on for a while now! We'll hopefully be announcing that here very soon!!

Also - it looks like you're based in Toronto? ? We're just down the road ! If you're interested in the product or would potentially want to be in on any initial rounds with a DIY product, send us a message and we'll see what we can do!

Any thoughts on trying to get this into the dealer network somehow? I could see a lot of dealers loving to have something like this since a lot of them in my area have deals with things like Ziebart coating.

I can see this going very well if it's offered to the average Joe that doesn't look into these forums and some of the non-enthusiasts. Unfortunately a lot of us on here take our trucks out on trails and that seems to ruin the film :( If I could get something like this and have it backed at my dealer I wouldn't mind trying it on my new JL, for a decent price. USAA doesn't include glass replacement here in IN, so I have to pay my deductible for replacement.

How does it hold up to wear and scratches from the windshield wipers?

500ish sounds insane for a 1.5' by 5' piece of plastic film.

In all honesty, you'd be better off with moving your glass deductible to $0 and applying the difference against this expense. I bet you could get 15 years of glass coverage for $500.

Also, the second I hear “nano”, “micro”, “ceramic”, I think snake oil. Does it have graphene nano tubes as well?

please show some third party test results, “best protection you can buy” doesn’t cut it.

And yet dozens, if not more, forum members do the ceramic coating for the paint..........

The new plastics aren't your father's plastic. It's amazing what can be done - think folding phone for technology in polymers, acrylics, and glass.
There's a lot out there explaining how the stuff works if you get around the marketing videos. Technology is real, glass surfaces can be modified (proof is Gorilla Glass, now in version 5 I believe)

I’ve had mine on since September and love it. I have driven close to 20k miles since then. I do big trips, hit trails, and circled the country so thankful to have it as there’s been plenty of times I’ve heard some things hit it pretty hard. Especially because I do long trips it was pretty necessary as I didn’t want to deal with figuring out if I can get a windshield replaced in the middle of a trip. I also tint my windshields too so that’s a different kind of pain replacing a windshield. Its a convenience thing for me as well as I hate the stargazing windshield pits too. So far it’s been great for me.

I try and lift them for a second or wipe them down if I think it’s going to rain just to try and not drag any sand across them that builds from sitting in Vegas as that’s what’s recommended but I rarely ever do and I don’t see any issues. Id recommend being better than me about it though.

Hey Everyone!

The Team at ExoShield is so excited to be a part of this forum and community ? We want to make sure anyone here that wants their windshield protected by ExoShield gets taken care of! If you have any questions about our windshield protection film, don't hesitate to reach out.

So first of all, what is ExoShield? Think of it like a giant phone screen protector, but engineered to protect your windshield from damage caused by rocks and other small objects hitting the bare glass.

film-pull-resized-png.png

Our goal is to keep the broken windshield club as small as possible from here on out!

If you’ve been Jeeping for any amount of time you are no stranger to the inevitable stress of even the smallest hit to your windshield.
Let ExoShield give you some peace of mind while you are on, and off-road!

How does ExoShield work, and how do you get protected?

ExoShield is a completely transparent film that features our endurance class nanoceramic hardcoat to make it super durable and scratch resistant for long lasting protection in any environment. When applied to your windshield, ExoShield makes the glass 6X stronger against impacts and is so clear that it does not impact the ADAS sensors underneath newer windshields.

Interested in getting your windshield protected? We would be happy to get you in contact with the installer nearest you!
OR you can always visit www.getexoshield.com/windshield-protection-film-installers to connect with the installing locations in your area.
