I’m CERTAIN Jeep considered many, many names. Did marketing tests, considered socio-political ramifications of new names or reused older names like Comanche, Honcho, Willys, etc.

A multi billion dollar corporation like them doesnt makes a decision like a new vehicle based on one person’s opinion nor should they.

Have thought this at times as gladiator is designed based off a wrangler and the willys jeep truck was based on the CJ (to keep brand cohesion/capitalize on wartime jeep and make use of design with limited steel stamping depth.)
The original gladiator had no such open jeep design origins.
But I guess "the beautiful brute" had a catchier name- "gladiator" over "jeep truck" (which I guess sounds kinda generic).

And they wanted to be able to use Willy’s as a trim level, which may have influenced the decision.
