It's far better than GM's design, which allows the tailgate to fall right on top of the receiver hitch ball and damage the tailgate. Of course, GM's engineering has been piss-poor since 1988, so no surprise there.

The purpose of the swing-out option is that it puts you 2 feet closer to the front of the cargo box, which makes loading and unloading certain items much easier to do.

I’ll tell you my story.....

When I bought my last F-350 a friend warned me to be sure to keep the tailgate locked as people were stealing them...He then told me he heard someone in the middle of the night trying to get his tailgate off and went out with his Sig to see. They ran off when they saw him...

Anyway I live in the country and thought there is no way someone would do that to me....A few months later I took the truck to the local Ford dealer for some minor issues and when I went to pick it up realized that the tailgate was missing! The fu#$%ing dealer would not stand behind the theft and gave me a price of almost $4000 to replace it. Evidently you have to buy each piece separately and assemble it. I won’t bore you with the rest of the de tails but suffice to say that I always keep my tailgate locked now!

I'd love that option. Once you lift it a few inches and then slap on some bigger tires, things get really tall really quick. This would make it much easier to pull something out of the bed by not having to be standing two feet further back like you do with the traditional tailgate.

Kinda like the Ridgeline swing gate.

I would love this tailgate. Wish the box came with the over wheel well storage. Anybody make a nice plastic over wheel arch in-bed storage?
Me too . . . but with the hidden trunk the 2 qualify for AWESOME ! But IF RAM (not likely on JT) were able, it would need to also have a FULL size spare ! TFL Truck's new video (today) shows aCOMPARE of all 4 major truck makers Bed Gates ! ***

IF IF IF I could get 100% what I wanted....

60/40 split like the Dodge WITH the under bed storage like the Honda.. Best of both worlds.

Sorry if this is a stupid question (having never owned a truck before), but how does this tailgate help with loading heavy items?

Traditional tailgate - lift item on to tailgate, slide to the back of bed.
This tailgate - lift item on to bed, slide to the back of bed.

Seems like the exact same thing to me. The only difference is how you close the door after your items in the bed.
Even if you only have one thing in the bed, you still have to lean over the tailgate to get to it. If there's something behind that, you have to lean that much further... the swing-out tailgate shorts the distance you have to lean, reducing back strain. And if you've got a trailer hooked up, you can just swing open the tailgate rather than smash it onto the top of the hitch.

This is an awesome feature. If I end up getting a Ram Rebel or Power Wagon instead of a Gladiator Rubicon, I'll definitely be considering this.
