It definitely looks cool and seems like a novel idea, but I don't see how this is more beneficial in any way than a traditional tailgate. Also being a $1,000 option, I'll pass.
Getting things out of the back of the truck with a swing gate vs a traditional tailgate is my thought. If an aftermarket hinge conversion comes along I'll be having a look at it.

Cool looking tailgate. Would be great to have such a tailgate on a Gladiator. Or as another option put a Honda Ridgeline type tailgate on a Gladiator. But just make certain that you put locks on the tailgate, something that Honda failed to do. Oh and put steps into the corners of the rear bumper.

I think I'll just take a regular tailgate.

This would be nice when loading something in the bed with a tow motor or skid loader. But I don't think I want one.

Has everyone already seen this? Same corporate parent.... would be nice to see this as an option.

Yea, way cool . . . saw it yesterday on I think TFL ! ? If they just wouldn't combine the spray-in liner with it (making the total $1K); ~$500 for the spray-in + ~$500 for the Tailgate . Oh, Dodge Truck is dead - RAM, is the plan and has been for a few years now ! If I were still considering a DT I would consider this option - but only if they make it a stand alone option without the bed liner . Won't be seeing it anytime soon on the JT, if at all, imo, though it might be cool too .

So in the big scheme of things locks on truck tailgates are fairly new. Lots of people got by for a very long time with out locking tailgates on their trucks. Why is it such a big deal now that a tailgate lock? Unless you are going to have a shell or a hard tonneau cover, some of which cover the tailgate and lock anyway securing the tailgate, then what is a locking tailgate on an open truck bed going to do for you? Why is it such a big deal?

We are all totally dudsville. At launch we were all ready to buy buy buy ! Lol. This sucks.

As for the tailgate. If any vehicle deserves it, that's our lifestyle glad.

I'd buy if I could hang a tire off the swing gate.

Wonder about structural integrity ten years out.

Hope for shell option accommodation for side box and extender for tent

It's just that. I have always had a hard folding cover on my trucks. I will at times use it as a large trunk. Keep tools, kids stuff things like that. Having a large lockable truck is one of the main reasons I have only owned trucks the last 15 years.

Yes, this tailgate. Just wait until you hear it rattling....The need to ensure the tailgate seals in all of those positions was a challenge. Let alone NVH testing was a bear. I’m certain it will be a great option and functionally it makes sense.

I've owned a Gen1 Honda Ridgeline for 10 years. Love the side swing tailgate and use it all the time. Very practical especially when loading heavy items. I don't think I'd want/like the split in the middle double-door tailgate like the Ram has.

The Honda Ridgeline tailgate has held up with zero issues in the last 10 years. No rattles, no issues at all. If the Gladiator had this option I'd want it to be exactly like the Ridgline and not the Ram.

Sorry if this is a stupid question (having never owned a truck before), but how does this tailgate help with loading heavy items?

Traditional tailgate - lift item on to tailgate, slide to the back of bed.
This tailgate - lift item on to bed, slide to the back of bed.

Seems like the exact same thing to me. The only difference is how you close the door after your items in the bed.

Really helps those of us with lower back issues. Keeps your back straight as you lift something heavy into the bed without having to bend forward at the waist. A lot of heavy items (that aren’t flat) don’t slide easily across the gap between a tailgate that’s down and the bed.
