So this morning I go to the the local rental center to pick up a scissor lift for my father in law... we are having LED lights put in our garage. Great... it’s going to be a good day... putting the Gladiator to work. I walk in and told the guy I’m here to pick it up. He said man I can’t let you take it in that Jeep. I said what?? Lol man it’s rated to tow almost 8,000lbs. He said I’m supposed to only let it go out on a 3 quarter ton due to insurance purposes... (ok I can understand and totally get that) —this is where it gets good— he says but I’ll let it go on a 1/2 ton.... mmm ok ?.. I said man I tow my boat all the time it is rated to tow almost 8,000lbs. (I have the Max Tow) He said the lift weighs 8k pounds... (trying to cover his tracks) ok slow your roll cowboy it def does not... it’s a standard normal size scissor lift..and he said the trailer weighs 3k... def does not. I’m like alright man lol . I walked out... then I went back in and said man you do realize this is a truck... he says I can’t do it. Alright bro no worries. Called the wife to tell my father in law to get his new GMC 1500 z71 to come get the thing. —-I’m ok with that... i understand policy and procedure... but we are bending the rules a little with the 1/2 ton.—- I get back to house to see his new GMC is still sitting in the garage... I’m like ok? I thought he was going to get the lift??? My wife said he went in the white farm truck... —it’s a 99 gmc single cab that might be rated to tow 4-5k—... I’m like your kidding me, there is no way. 30min later he is backing the scissor lift into the garage all cool like. He gets out of the truck knowing I’m frustrated. Lol he said ah they just have their rules.... lol

It’s hard for people to understand what these are capable of... because they have never seen them before and don’t know what they are or the concept.

I had the same issue with my Dakota, which had a “Max” tow package 5500lbs, trying to rent a 2K-3K small tractor, the rental company would only let it go on a 3/4-ton truck, regardless of how much your 1/2 ton can haul. So I drove the tractor to the job site, about 2-miles away. I haven’t tried getting a large trailer yet with my new JT. They have a 14-foot tip loading trailer, I use to move my orchard tractor, and again, needed a 3/4 ton truck to get it. Once I got it home, I used my Renegade Trailhawk to tow the that trailer back (empty of course).
Cheers

My son rented a u-haul trailer to move from Iowa to Florida. He said there's a sign in their office that they can't rent to Jeep vehicles because they don't have regular roofs. Luckily his Jeep was a Compass and that was ok........ but unless it was an SUV type Jeep like Compass, Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, etc. - no way.
So I suspect you'd have trouble renting a trailer from u-haul with one of these. Unless you had a body colored hard top, maybe they'd not notice that it's fiberglass and removable?

I had the same questioning when I went to rent the largest UHaul tandem enclosed trailer to go from Naples, FL to Nashua NH. The guy told me to be sure I bring a “really big truck” or they can’t rent it to me...

I roll up with my F-350 and asked if they had any issues...believe it or not they actually looked at my door sticker...My GCWR is something like 21,000 pounds !

F350? I wouldn't even bother looking - you could tow two of those trailers with it. Considering their trailers are aluminum top to bottom in most cases - you'd have to load it up with Jeep axles and bricks to even make that truck twitch. (Maybe load up an elephant?)

Ok the point is... he let him leave with it in the 99 GMC 1500 single cab truck... that is no where near as capable as my Gladiator.

Some people do not get it.

lol

They don't care - they think SUV - as in Escape or whatever, Jeep - hahaha, that's not a truck! They see any pickup, even one with a little 250 I6 in it and assume it's capable. The JT with max tow especially is rated only something like a couple hundred pounds under what my extended cab Silverado was rated - but they would would laugh you out of the place if you tried to tell them you could almost match my Chevy in payload or towing. (and if I had the higher gear ratio in that Chevy - you WOULD have matched it)
It's perception - they don't get it.
My wife's Grand Cherokee is rated higher in towing than some pickups out there.
