I know quite a few of us run large tires and struggle to carry a spare without taking up their entire bed. A few companies make a bumper carrier that will support a 40 but it puts the load really far out and drags on rocks.
I had my shop relocate my stock spare tire carrier under my bed rack. It’s supported with a steal beam to distribute the weight between two of the cross bars. You can use the stock tool to lower/raise the tire or use a drill. I’ll still be able to put my RTT on the bedrack which was the goal.
My spare hangs a bit lower than I was hoping but it’s still the best solution I’ve come up with.

That’s probably the main reason I’ll never go 40s… because it doesn’t fit under the bed. Great idea with the rack, just not very practical if you ever need to use the truck as a truck.

Yeah, I get your point. It's definitely not for everyone. In my opinion, the bed is already too small to be practical as a truck and in my case, the bed sits way to high to load and unload it. Plus the half height rack is already in the way. I have never put enough gear in the bed that it goes over the height of the bed. If you wanted more storage space, doing this with a full height bed rack would be a good solution.

How about mounting the tire on top of the rack? That way it frees up the bed.

My rooftop tent goes on top of the rack. Plus it’s pretty challenging to get a 130lb wheel and tire on top of the rack.

My fault. I was not thinking it weighed that much.

This is very similar what I did when I flipped my receiver hitch and relocated my spare, but I used an old spare tire winch from an RV trailer I had on the shelf. I saved the OEM Gladiator unit for another project:

Nice work! It looks like you made the whole rack?
