Quick question for the masses. I've had my JT at the local gear install shop (Babbitt Bearing in Columbus, Ohio) for a few days now. They are (trying) installing new Spicer 5.13 gears for me. What should have been a 1-2 day job is now going into a 4th day. The front. according to them. went together perfect. The rear. however, is giving them some issues. According to them, the pinion splines are not lining up with the yoke splines. They claim they can press it in, but then would have to press it back apart with every shim change. My knowledge of gear installs is very basic (hence. why they are doing it), but the guy says this isn't normal fitment. Babbitt has ab excellent reputation around here for knowing their stuff, so I trust them when they say this isn't right. They've been reaching out to Spicer for some guidance and Spicer has been quite slow to respond. Part numbers are all exactly as they should be. Spicer is supposed to be checking lot numbers for any similar issues. They claimed they could move forward with fitting them as is, but he's not convinced they're right. So. I'm having them hold off until Spicer responds.

Anyone have an idea of how tight the pinion shaft is supposed to fit into the yoke? Do you have to press it back out every time you shim the pinion, even with setup bearings (which they are using)?

Press it in how? If the mechanics don't like it...I'd trust them. All I can speak on is a slightly different experience: I had Yukon 5.13 gears installed by a shop, and recently swapped out the rear yoke to install an Adam's driveshaft myself.

I will say...it definitely required a puller to get the factory yoke off, and it's definitely very snug getting it on (can only go on so far by hand, and pulls in a bit more once you use an impact on it).

Not sure exactly. Sitting here at work trying to watch some install videos and all I've seen so far is people going at the pinion nut with an impact. I'm pretty sure the guy said the pinion splines are helical cut, which doesn't seem right to me as in the videos I've seen so far, the splines appeared straight cut.

The splines are definitely straight/slotted. The pinion gear itself is helical obviously. Not sure what they meant.

It won't fits just by pressing it by hands. It must be tapped in while holding the pinion. Once a few thread shows then thread the nut on and impact rest of the way.
