Please pardon….

Problem #1: Say for instance, your social security earnings (as listed on the SS website in our individual account) don’t match what’s listed on your W2?
What does that mean?
Long story short…. For 2024, myself and my fellow (ex & current) coworkers discovered - whatever it means - our W2’s for Q4 don’t match the SS website Social Security earnings. I know there’s a lot of ‘behind’ the scenes that go on… and I don’t know if our employer paid those earnings to SS. It’s a big unknown….
I’ve (and others) have contacted HR (Human Resources) about the issue. Some of us heard back and I haven’t heard a peep.
From what I’ve heard, our employer is seeking legal council (which, can’t be a good thing). That’s all I know….

Problem #2
My husband and I are still waiting for a sizeable refund from the government for our 2024 income taxes.
The IRS sent us - what I think is - a CP05A I think. We worked with our tax preparer to get all the information the government needed.
That was about 2 months ago, and we’re still waiting and don’t know what’s going on.

Does Problem #1 have anything to do with Problem#2?? Would the mismatch of SSI reportings be what’s holding up our Tax Refund?

***The history here…. I worked for company A (large company) which sold a MFG plant (and its employees) to company B (smaller company) at the end of Sept 2024. For Q4 , I was employed by Company B. My SS earnings (Problem #1) are missing from Company B for Q4.
This is not surprising to me, as Company B does NOT run a tight ship and seems willy nilly at best. 🙄 It’s only a few perks that keep me there.

For those with this type or expertise… What’s your thoughts?
Would the SSI earnings be holding up our tax refund because of the mismatched numbers?

What would you suggest I do…….??
The temptation to ‘report’ the issue is strong - although, I’m sure the government is already aware and its sitting in a pile of paperwork that’ll take 10 years for them to go thru it. 🙄

Thanks!! I’m clueless and tired of google searching!! 😂

Look up Dr. Weir, he seems to be a good source for Social Security related information.

2 months wait for response from the IRS on a notice is not out of the norm.

Does Company B use a payroll service, or is payroll done inhouse?

Actually…it was in December when we submitted the information they requested.

Company B uses UKG….
Let’s just say - Company B bit off more than they could chew with buying this plant. The whole payroll, and benefits were so screwed up even into 2025. It took 6 months before we got our 401k’s setup. They might’ve overlooked the concept that their original MFG plant is all UNION. The Plant they took ownership of, is NOT union. They had to keep our benefits (non union people) separated from theirs. Yea…it was a cluster….

Ok, so IRS notice was responded to in December. I still don't think it's been long enough to be overly concerned, but understandable why you are. Have you called the number on the notice to confirm the IRS has received your response?

Company B using a payroll service should remove any doubt of withholdings being paid.
