I grew up with Jeeps my whole life and have been in everything from the YJ to the JT. Back in the day, we all ran CBs as a form of communication. During my small stint away from Jeeps I had a CB in my Silverado Duramax and realized that not many folks use them anymore and even truckers don't rely upon CBs since the smartphone.

I know it's a contested debate so I thought since Texas is my home base and most of my wheeling is out here. What are you guys running?

CBs/HAM/GMRS

I don't want to install a multitude of radios in my Gladiator and would like to do just one. What are you seeing out there and what are the majority running these days for friendly communication out overlanding, camping, and wheeling?

HAM - 2m / 70cm installed in the Jeep. Also have a handheld on 2m / 70cm.

The 10,20,40 meter is reserved for the home base station.

Our whole group runs GMRS. I've got handhelds and hard mounts in both Jeeps.

I've been leaning towards GMRS but wanted to see what y'all are doing. On my recent trip out to Bridgeport, with all the jeeps I expected to see folks running a little bit of everything but 95% of everyone out there didn't even have a walkie-talkie.

I have a hand-held midland (@midland) 75-822 CB radio that I can plug into the cigarette lighter and fixed antenna if I want, or use the battery pack and shorty antenna that comes with the radio.

however, as you mentioned, almost no one uses it due to abuse by folks saturating the channels with noise. As a result, I have installed the midland MXT575 50-watt GMRS (https://www.northridge4x4.com/part/mxt575-midland-mxt575-micromobile-2-way-radio) under the steering column and routed a cat-5 extension to the mic in my overhead center Molle panel ( https://www.molle-platform-solution...-wrangler-front-overhead-molle-panel-hard-top) and secure it with the magnetic mic adaptor (Magnetic Mic https://a.co/d/ccKYybS).

We are running the 575 in my JT as well as my wife's JL. It's a GREAT radio.

Sure! Here you go:

I routed the antenna and power wires up the two a-pillars (not together to prevent noise) and across to the center Molle panel. The red and black wires power the two power plugs I also installed in the Molle panel. They power the CB and the trailer camera when I’m towing.

I’ve had the CB radio for many years, but I specifically got this particular GMRS because it has 50 watt output, is all in the mic, so I can hide the base unit, and it has weather channels. The additional plus is the high powered USB-C that the base unit provides.
