I was in sugar sand today when the LSD couldn't keep up in 2WD and I started to bog down. Came to a stop, shifted to 4WD low and continued on for a min before suddenly the vehicle redlined while getting a "neutral" flashing on the instrument cluster. I shifted the transmission into neutral, however the vehicle remained at redline RPM, and then I pulled the transfer case further back into 4WD low. Some horrible grinding sounds emitted however it re-engaged into low and the RPMs came back into normal range and all was well for rest of trail.

Anyone else experience such? Did I do any damage with grinding noise re-engaging into low with it rolling wide open?

I would think “Some horrible grinding sounds emitted” would not be a good thing. I myself would change the fluid at a minimum. I don’t know if the transfer case drain plug has a magnet.
Might even have a scope poked in for a look around at the gears?

Sounds like you didn't get the transfer case fully into gear and it slipped into neutral. Hopefully you didn't do too much damage to the transfer case.

Yeah I figured it was my screw up not fully engaging. I was quite surprised however with vehicle's reaction going totally wide open as a result.

I’ve had my JKU pop out of low but I just let off the throttle and the Jeep came to a stop. Edit:: Totally my fault as it wasn’t fully engaged in 4Lo, and a few months later I did it again. Needless to say I make sure it’s all the way back now.

Then I re-engaged 4Lo and went on my way.
I think if it got stuck reving up I would try to shut it down. I don’t speak from experience on this though as my JKU is 9 years old and a couple generations behind on technologies.

Once the T-case slips into neutral there's no resistance on the engine, so it will rev up really quickly.

It's a good practice to stop and get it into 4-low, but creep forward a little while still giving the shifter some pressure to make sure it's all the way in.

It happened to me this weekend! Popped out of 4Lo, Rev'd like a banshee!. I cycled from Drive to Neutral then back to drive. It rev'd back to normal. Engaged 4Lo and went on.

Redlined? Revved like a banshee?
Are we saying the engine revved to the rev limiter
With my 22-gas Rubicon, it only revs to 3,000 RPM when I floor it in neutral or park, such as when I'm blipping the throttle.

Yeah right up to redline.

Good to know how to control the runaway revving.
