I’m wanting to purchase tire chains for my 2023 Gladiator Sport S. It has the stock 245/75R17 tires on it. I have some chains picked out, but then I saw that the manual says I need class S chains. I can’t see why this is? There looks to be plenty of room in the rear wheel wells. Who can help?

Are you buying chains because you need them or just for in case I get stuck? If the latter would highly recommend tire socks, much better.

Get rid of the stock tires and buy a set of Rubi take off tires.

If Nevada is anything like California he's getting them because he'll be denied access to certain places, under certain conditions. CHP used to set up checkpoints where I had my mountaintop lair. No chains, no access.

OP, I'd go with the book recommend, since it can be a warranty issue if you don't. S Class recommend could be due to limited clearance behind the tire/wheel, due to some component. I haven't checked my Gladiator since it isn't an issue here in NY.

I'm wanting them just in case it gets bad enough that I have to have them. I have a 50 minute commute early in the morning that gets sketchy once in a while. I hope to not need chains, but was thinking of having a set just in case. My tires are mud and snow, so I'll rarely need them. I've never owned tire socks, but I don't see them being very useful in snow. (Ice maybe, but not soft snow.) Also, I have no interest in running bigger Rubi tires.

Thanks everyone.

Class S chains are just tight clearance chains.

I carry these. A full set front and rear for the JT and TJ. Note they have 'chains' on the side of the tire. Some have chains here, some have a cable. Avoid the cheaper ones that only have a bungie. They are a good option being as they are a 'chain' style but smaller links. I don't think there is a v-bar option for these and you wouldn't want that anyway unless off highway.

Thank you. I'll check them out. I don't use rubber tensioners either. After being a truck driver and doing plenty of chaining up, I've grown to liking the cam style tensioners. Maybe an occasional bungie cord on trouble spots.

These still have a rubber tensioner. I have never seen cam style locks on anything but actual chains. But what I mean is there are a few of the 'diamond' style chains that have a full piece of rubber that goes around the full diameter of the chain.

See this one? how it is all metal?

These are the cam tensioners I was referring to. I think they work well and I'm familiar with them.

AutoSock 870 Tire Snow Socks for Car, SUV, & Pickup - Better Alternative to Tire Chains (Pack of 2) https://a.co/d/4FzDHau

These things are so dumb…. And then you will try them, and never deal with actual chains for highway road required use again…. Don’t get me wrong, beefy chains for muddy snowy crappy roads are great!! But for chain required road use- auto socks are where it’s at….. they work unbelievably well and are so simple/easy to put on.

These are also approved for use in all western states- to include Colorado. Look up your states “alternative traction device” law…. A bunch of auto manufacturers don’t allow for use of chains- this is what they require.
