I hadn't ever seen this before. The tire shop said it was from the tire mold. Any tire experts confirm?

Yes. It's normal. You will see it on some tires in the marketplace. Some manufacturers do better than others at taking that flashing off before leaving the factory. It does not affect tire performance.
