tire question ........

I have 35x12.50x18 tires mounted on stock/upgraded gladiator overland wheels (18").

I have a 17" spare wheel.

I would like to mount a 35"x10.5x17" tire to the spare wheel in case of emergencies. I don't want to rotate it in.

Here's the questions.....

will this setup work - can it be done?
if the spare is used will it be the same size as the other tires for a ride to a tire shop. I am taking a long road trip and want an acceptable setup at a reasonable cost. I don't want to buy a take off wheel.

The tire is the same brand, make, just a different size.

Shouldn’t be a problem...
The only time you really need to worry about running different sized tires is with an AWD vehicle.

Thanks brother - it's not my thing - just wanted to make sure - thanks for answering.

I took a similar approach, and after speaking with the staff at Discount Tire, mounted a 315/70/17 on my spare. I have 285/75/18s mounted on the Overland rim, so the difference is negligible - 1% different on the diameter, but 10% difference on the width (which is the one I'm not so worried about).

The numbers are approximations even within the same brand. If tires are mismatched, the open diff may be the only drive option. Overall diameter and height of the sidewall is important. It affects rotational speed and those pesky lockers and such. Know before you go.

Yeah I wasn’t looking to keep it on the truck long term. Maybe to get somewhere or even a day to get a replacement tire ordered if needed.

I’d like to keep the same type/size close in case I was far from getting somewhere at night or whatever. My tundra has five identical tires and wheels as we used to travel a lot.

My other question is - is it normal to have a 17” spare tire when you have 18” stock wheels?

You should be just fine. That's really a smart way to go, you don't have a wide tire hanging down in the spare location, but have the same diameter tire for emergency use. I assume you either have Nitto Trail Grapplers or Toyo Open Country, as those are the only two that make skinny 35's on 17" rims, as far as I know.

Same brand tire? Same 35”? No problem.

the width makes no difference. Your differential can’t tell a difference in width. Neither can any traction control sensors. Only a difference in height can be noticed.
What that difference in height is before the Jeep electrical/nanny systems notice is, I haven’t a clue.

Does anyone know the width of the stock spare tire?

On my Sport S it's the same as the other stock tires: 245/75 R17.

I was wondering width of the wheel. I see I typed “tire”. I’ve got the Monday’s today.

They are Kenda Klevers.
