Brad-

1. How screwed would a guy be if the PCM got lost or damaged during the shipping/unlocking phase? I know some are considering or have bought a 2nd PCM to limit downtime, but the advise is to clone it first at the dealer. What can be done if I don't have that back up?

2. Does a guy have to install a separate tune for towing vs. daily or just 87 vs. 93? I assume you can run 93 on a 87 tune and enjoy some of the gains ? I have never run 93 in the truck to date, but plan to next time I tow to see what happens. I'm not opposed to running 93, but for normal daily I likely will continue to run 87. I'm not the kind of guy that wants to change the tune for multiple applications, I'd rather set and forget.

I agree with @zuki_dan. The tune was a more noticeable change. I bought my Jeep on 35's with 4.10's, then tuned, then regeared to 4.88. I specifically did them separately and got used to driving the tune before doing gears so that I'd recognize the difference.

Just yesterday BMP sent me the updated tunes and they are a big change on top of the original. Pedal feel on the 6MT tune is much improved.
This is what I was hoping to hear.

All my files are tow friendly and were developed in 100 degree Midwest weather with terrible environmental conditions. Even my dyno time was 100+ degrees in the shop. So you’re good to go on the towing front! Transmission will behave soooo much better too.

If your ECU gets lost, worst case it’s $150 ish through most Mopar wholesalers for a new blank one. You’d have to have the dealer program the new one which could require a tow if your dealer doesn’t have a mobile guy. I tell people to use UPS and buy $500 worth of insurance for that reason.

87 sucks in these from a power adding standpoint but I can still make them sing and run a ton better with the 87 with much better torque delivery and refinement. But most of my customers once they experience the tuned 93 file, they don’t go back. You can always run higher octane than tuned for, but not the other way around. It takes all of 1-2 minutes to change the tunes around with your PC and MPVI. I change at the pump quite often 😂

I haven’t done gears yet, I’m running 35 x 11.50 x17 I don’t do towing but my Jeep runs great in my case I don’t see me doing gears yet, I feel good with just the tunning for now.

I assume that you cannot program the PCM on the bench and needs to be done installed in the vehicle?

At this point yes, eventually I plan to support ECU unlocking and bench flashing on my end so I can be a one stop shop for guys who want cloned PCMs and a one stop shop for the whole process outside of buying the MPVI.

My first focus will be on being able to do the unlocking myself. That will save me and my customers a TON of turnover time. Once I have that ironed out I’ll dive deeper into the cloning stuff if it makes sense.

I got a quote from Magic Motor Sports to make all this happen. Just waiting until it makes sense for me on the financial side. But hopefully soon. It’s about $6,000 to get started, not counting the spare ECUs and what not I’ll need to practice on.

On that note, bench flashing will be a great option for 6MT customers. But 8AT customers will still need their own MPVI since the TCU is built into the valve body of the transmission.
