Uinta Bed Rails and Bed Liner

I want to ensure I am doing an install properly without stripping the threading if I need to tap through the bed liner. So here is my order of operations:

• Try to push through the bed lining with a drill and the 10mm screw itself
• If that doesn't work, use a 6mm tap on the hole to prep it for another try
• If that doesn't work, cry a little and then try again.

Is this the way?

I would avoid the drill bit and using the screw as a thread chaser.

What I did was use a pick and a scratch awl to punch through the liner material and then use a actual thread chaser bit. There is risk with a actual cutting tap of messing up the threads.

The hole is there, it's just not big enough for the 10mm.

It's an m6x1.00 thread. You can make an m6 chaser with a spare bolt. Dremel with a cutting wheel and carefully cut 3 lines on to the threads lengthwise, then cleaning it using an m6 nut.

Edit: try not to cut too deep. Cut just to the depth of the threads.
