Looking to build a general toolkit for my Jeep Gladiator Rubicon Diesel.

I did a search and didn’t find any matching topics but I am newish here.

I am looking to build a little toolkit with the essentials for the car - in the same spirit as the included ratchet and torx kit provided by Jeep.

I am not trying to build an off road kit - looking for a general maintenance toolkit. Here is the rub. Like the provided toolkit, I don’t want to carry around tools/sizes that I don’t need has anyone created a kit with just the tools and sizes you need?

thanks in advance!

Unfortunately a "basic" tool kit is really not possible.

Bone stock, all you need are metric wrenches and sockets. Once you start modifying you have to throw in SAE tools as most items are geared to the American standard.

Generally, 22mm and down in wrenches and sockets will take care of most everything on your JT. But again, once you start modding, then 15/16" and down come into play.

I have had a Kobalt tool kit in a plastic Kobalt tool box for years. The box is too bulky for the JT so I got a tool roll and moved everything into it.

The answer to your request might be a bit nebulous depending on your range of work that you expect to perform. I have done most of the mods on my 3 Jeeps (JTR and 2 JKR's) myself; suspensions, steering, bumpers, lighting, etc. The usual suspects so to speak.

Here is what I carry in all 3 and it has served me well:
- Metric and SAE socket set in both 3/8" and 1/2" with several extensions and adapters
- Torx driver set (sockets)
- Metric and SAE combination wrenches (I agree about the 10mm comment above and so I carry 2 extra ratcheting 10mm combination wrenches)
- Screw driver set (Phillips and flat head)
- Metric and SAE Allen head wrenches
- Wire Stripper/Crimper
- Diagonal cutters
- Long nose pliers
- Channel lock style pliers
- Crescent Wrenches 6" & 10"

Those are the basics. I also have a bunch of other tools that I carry that are more specialized, such as sockets and combination wrenches that are larger for use on the suspension and steering, center punch set, etc. but most of that is not for "emergency use". If I use a particular tool when doing a mod or such, then I just add that to the tool box in case I wind up having to need it out in the field to repair that item.

These are the things I've messed with so far and I keep a note on my phone with the required tools:

  • Antenna: 3/8 wrench
  • License Plate: 10mm socket
  • Lug Nut: 22mm six-sided deep well socket
  • Oil Filter Housing Nut: 24mm socket
  • Oil Drain Plug: 13mm socket
  • Rubicon Rock Rails: 10mm deep well socket, 10mm wrench, 13mm socket

I don't think what I've called out is that egregious. It all fits in a Bestop RoughRider (Bestop Stock Photo below). In my JK's it sits under the Driver seats and in the JTR it sits under the rear seat and takes up a minimal amount of that space.

At the end of the day, the tool you need will be the one you didn't bring.

I hear ya, I was stuck in a snow drift last Wednesday and wanted to use the wheel attachment for the hi-lift but couldn't get the lock nut off the bolt because I forgot the socket and the crescent wrenches.

Seriously, I carry a small SAE/Metric socket set, an 11-in-1 screwdriver, rags, and some spare bulbs & fuses.
If that won't fix it, I need to get to a garage.

This is more along lines of my thinking.

I’ll add torx kit and some pliers, crescents and screwdrivers.

Now, to really dial it in - I would only
Like to carry on those sockets in use on the Jeep.

so if the 12mm socket isn’t used for routine crap, I ditch it out of the kit. In an emergency, pliers and/or crescent will have to suffice.
