Seriously, do get a decent battery charger or tender, and if your truck sits more than 2 or 3 days, especially over a week, keep the batteries up. You can connect to the top of the main or crank battery and it will keep both up without disconnecting things.
As soon as I got the auxiliary battery replaced, I purchased this battery tender and connected it to the main. Per your response, good to know that it will keep both batteries maintained. I've had the JT since July 2019 and only have 17,000 miles on it so I think this tool will benefit me greatly as it does sit for extended times, especially in the winter. Here's a link to the tender:

Looks like a decent charger - good to see they even list out the 4 charging phases it is programmed to do.
If they sit, especially in winter, good to keep the batteries up. When they sit with low voltage, low state of charge, they lose life expectancy, the number of cycles they can handle is reduced.

I have had the ESS charging message for the last couple of weeks. In Alabama for Christmas with the hard freeze I put a battery tender on my main battery the ESS charging message has gone away. The tender does not show full charge but the ESS shows ready.

ESS threshold has appeared to be about 12.4 volts in my experience. Over that you don't get the message, below that you do. Tender, depending on the state of charge of the batteries, and the amperage of the tender, can take a very very long time, or not even fully charge a really low battery.

The battery has been taking around a 70 mile drive for it to show ready. Possibly going bad, will check it after the first of the year. I just wanted to not get stranded out of town with the holiday messing every thing up. Had rather deal with this at home with my garage and tools. Not laying in the yard without tools.

tarts fine. I get the message every time I start the vehicle now.
Changed the Aux battery out and that cured my problem. I have the diesel, so it took less than 1 hour to change out. Just take out the main battery and it's right there.
