Hey, Im new here and to the Jeep scene in general. Been a diesel truck guy forever and a day and now that I don't tow daily and Im still a truck guy Im in a gladiator. I have a set of 285 70 17 BFG AT'S left around from my Duramax. Just got this 21' 80th anniversary withthe 18's on it. Im thinking about getting some wheels to use my Bfgs on and wondering how they would work out if I go bigger in the future OR if theyll work at all. Stock suspension and dont plan on lifting (been there done that and no plans to do it again) dont want any rubbing but also wana keep my options open when these would eventually wesr out too. looking at these wheels specs right now... thoughts...
Specs:
  • Style No: 186
  • Size: 17x8
  • PCD1: 5 x 114.3
  • PCD2: 5 x 127
  • Offset: 10
  • Backspace: 4.89
  • Hub: 87
  • Load rate: 2500

The obvious thought in the back of my head is what wheel specs I would need to use these now and run a 35 on stock suspension one day.....

I've been doing some resesrch and using this https://tiresize.com/wheel-offset-calculator/ too but not sure on actual real world rubbing etc.

No issues for sure with the 285 series tire. Typically use 4.5” backspacing for a 12.5” tire but you can get away with up to 5.2”. Minor rub at full lock can be fixed with a couple of washers on the steering stops - yeah you lose a tiny fraction of your steering angle but it’s no big deal. 37x12.50r17 on stock wheels with 6” plus backspacing in the video but same concept. Good luck and welcome to the Gladiator obsession OlllllllO!!!!

Awesome. Thanks for the info. Im thinkin maybe it sounds like I should be looking for an 8" wide 17" wheel in a 0 offset possibly then or maybe a 9" wide with a -12 offset(?) if Im thinking right.

What is the general consensus for tallest skinniest on stock suspension for snow wheeling? Again, on a 17" wheel. Or is bigger and wider better? Ive always know tall skinny for winter to be best in my past Dmax days. We get winter around here and it lasts forever(at least October to April). This will be my daily driver but I take my dogs out of town daily and soke of the places we go in the winter aren't all that driveable for at least a few months out of the year. Some spots I didn't even take my lifted Duramax at times but those aren't really made for the 4wd use obviously. I've got my brand/style down just need to figure out a size for when the time comes. Maybe the Jeeps like a wider tire in the snow, I duno. Like I say I've been in the heavy truck scene before jumoing over to the JT side.

I've been using the handy tool on https://tiresize.com/wheel-offset-calculator/ and have a question. When you change the offset coverter tab and plug in a say 9" wide wheel vs the stock 7.5" and set the offest to say -6 vs the stock 44, does it fsctor that in when you go back to the offset calculator tab?

I'm looking at some procomp 17" x 9" wide in a -6mm offset which would be around 4.7(?)ish backspacing and want to make sure what Im looking at is correct. Thinking I could use them for the current 285 70 17 BFG's I already have then eventually maybe go to a 315 70 17 one day with them. But not sure how that calculator works for sure either other than the obvious on the 1 tab

Ok, so I have the option of either a 0 or a -15 offset wheel in a 17"x9" which am I better off going with? More concerned with stock suspension and future tire size fitament. I'll be first wearing out the 285 70 17 E range left over from my Duramax. But after these wear out maybe a 295 70 (or 75 if I could find them) 17 in a C or D range. In reality I think for my use tall skinny is going to function better than taller and wider. Mostly in city pavement and winter in city ice, then back road snow. We get a lot of snow in the winter. Learned enough not to go mudding in my daily regularily on purpose so.. should I stick with the 0 offset or am I better off with the -15 ?

You'll be fine with either offset on the stock suspension.

Is there any benefit of going with the -15 offset?
I get the more it wil stick out of the fender etc but other than that? Any other issues with travel or rubbing over the other? Driveability or steering radius?

@The Yeti not a considerable difference. I guess it just comes down to what is readily available and whether or not you want a wider stance. Increased turning radius and lower center of gravity.

It may be the difference between squeezing through a narrow gap or not. :like:

Good point. Im not worried about rock crawling through a narrow gap or anything main issue on width would be scratching the body on bush on a skinny trail but most off roading and wheeling would be in the snow for me, on a back road or unmaintained trail or making my own trail on a road everyone stops going down when the snow starts piling up. Now I'm going back and forth between 9" wide wheel vs 8.5" wide wheel both with 0 offest (or the 9" comes in -15 too) between the 0 offest wheels I can save $200 on a set if I go with the 8.5" (but $200 now is better spent than selling a buying again later) so just thinking on that now. Im not against woder track width, but taller skinny is what I assume might be best for me(?). Also I like the look of the 35 x 12.5 but honestly the bigger heavier just for the look probably isn't my smartest ootion for a daily driver (other than for looks) thinking maybe in the future a 295 70 17 (or 75 if I could find it) would make the most sense for real world use vs looks compromise and might honestly be the most functional too. Where do I go to use that tire size calc you screenshotted. I've been using another one and Im not sure how it changes or if it even does, factor in rim width
