Whining/Grinding when turning left or right

So took it to the dealer. They said it was the additive broke down in the rear diff. Already had the fluid for both front and back and the additive. I was holding out because of what the other shop told me with them saying it was the rear axle bearing. These people supposedly work on jeeps all the time. Will never take it there for anything again. I'll eat the 170.00 they charged but a hell of a lot less then the 1200 I'd be out of If i let them fix something that wasn't broke.

Went ahead and had the dealer service front and back and the transfer case. It's quiet now no whining or rattling when turning. Hope this helps someone else. So yea if it's over 40k definitely change the fluid if you have limited slip.

The one shop probably knew it was the fluid lied and they was gonna change fluid and take your 1200 bucks and laugh at you all the way to the bank. Lots of crooks out there.

To give some history about the jeep, I got it over a month ago. It has the Mopar 2.5in lift with 35in tires 12.5x20. When I turn at either direction it makes the noise described in the video.

Only seem to notice at low speeds. The jeep has 54k on it and I don't think the diff fluid has ever been changed. "According to carfax" Being new to Jeep and with some others here having this, I was wondering what the most obvious cause for this is.

At times if the turn is really tight I tend to hear almost like a chatter as well.

Come to find out, upon removing the drain plug on the diff chunks of metal came out of it..... I am currently waiting on a response from the dealership. However, adding the fluid did take away the grinding sound for me. Andddddd also removing shards of metal.

Could be unrelated, but if you have a LSD (Limited slip differential), they require friction additive. So changing the fluid could help with that. You can buy fluid that has this additive built in. I went with the Valvoline 75W 90. I may go up on the next change, which hopefully will be soon, when the dealership fixes this one.

That is definitely an option. Wouldn't hurt anything and its what.. $30 to do it yourself and have the peace of mind? I also bought a bottle of the Mopar friction additive. I just haven't put it in yet. Waiting on them to tell what the deal is with getting mine fixed.

well, to be honest with you if the pinion gear or ring gear were chewed up.. I think you’d have a lot of clatter back there. And you would possibly have that sound while going down the interstate straight. But if it’s only on a turn at low speeds, it’s most likely your LSD. Maybe a wheel bearing.. The sound I was hearing at low speeds making sharp turns like in parking lots. Sounded like two balloons rubbing together. And from my understanding, the limited slip differentials have clutch plates that rub together, and I think with the wrong amount of friction additive you can get really noisy differentials. I was also told you could never add too much friction additive so maybe it would be worth changing the oil yourself and then adding a bottle of that friction additive to it.

I'm having the same issue with my 21 Willys. Going to go ahead and change fluid in both diffs and see if it also works for me. Will report back.
