I was up in Kirkuk, Iraq for five months. I drove a Toyota Land Cruiser that was up-armored and had a straight-6 diesel engine and a manual 5-speed. That thing was a total pig, but as reliable as a sunrise. I got the locals at a service shop to lift it and put Bilstein shocks all around. Not sure why, just something to do. Had I taken it off-roading, I'd probably been shot, blown up by a mine or IED, or rolled it over on my own accord. Had a buddy who flew C-130s. We were mid-stream, figuring out how to smuggle it out of there to West Virginia, when I was moved to another project. It would have been cool!I would love to get my hands on a .gov diesel engine without all the DPF, EGR etc. crap on it. I bet it would run great!
There is a company near me that up-armor’s vehicles for .gov and various NGO’s around the world. They are mostly Toyota Land Cruisers 70 and 80 Series. I went in and asked them if they would sell me one before they applied armor and they just laughed… They sounded great though! I’m sure they would loose their contract if they sold one to me.
