You aren't going to "deflect" a rock. There are 2 or 3 threads on this and since they are an object with some mass and not subject to the movement of the air like a bug, once a rock takes aim, changing the air stream won't change the trajectory of the rock. Upright windshields simply get hit more and get hit more directly.

This is an excellent strategy. I wear my Stilo helmet with a few tear offs on the visor. 1 tear off for every 30 minutes of anticipated driving.
