When engaging four wheel drive on the highway, my front differential makes a whirring noise that stops when I let off the gas. Is this a concern?

My concern is the engagement of 4wd on the highway. That is if you're talking on dry pavement?

Jim
It's Wintertime; so icy roads or snowy conditions.

A few months.
My guess is it’s the brutal cold then…
I see you’re up in the “Rap”, I’m just below the state line but traverse 131 quite a bit especially up to the “Zoo”….
Anyway, my assumption, which is the same assumption I have for my own vehicle is the cold….
If it’s not getting worse or making any other sounds then should be ok but I’m no mechanic.
Just adding my .02 worth…

Glad to hear it's slick and not dry pavement, just never know the things that get tried these days. :)

With it being so cold, even metal shrinks, hopefully it goes away once things warm up. But as others have suggested, might be a good idea to check fluids are full.

I'll also add, for a good laugh, you should hear the gear noise my Stak 3-spd makes when going down the highway if my front hubs aren't unlocked; even when only in 2wd... My TJ is also lucky to make it up to 55 mph too.

Not sure exact model of tcase the Gladiators run, assuming np231 and rock-trac like the previous models (or some derivative). These likely still have wide chain connecting outputs together and the rest are gears/collars. They can hum a bit, but way quieter than a full gear-driven tcase.

How long does that take?
On the coldest day we recently had which was 0* with wind chill of -25*, it took approx., 10-15min., abt half my ride into work.

I guess I'll have to take a longer drive, for my 15-20 minute drive still had the humming from the front.

I had something similar on my 2022 Gladiator but was the opposite coming out 4H to 2H of the same whirring sound. Very similar also in that it only happens in cold temps and would stop once you let off the gas.

Best guess seems to be the FAD and the intermediate shaft with it slipping on the locking collar that is suppose to engage and disengage the front drive axle shafts. There is TSB about replacing the intermediate shaft for similar complaints. Mine eventually stopped doing it.
