I leave it on by default considering that it may come in handy in an on-road situation, but with all the vehicle modifications I'm beginning to wonder if its usefulness has been outmoded?​

Yes it does. I have had mine kick on multiple times on both Jeeps. Honestly I think it’s more important as you get increasingly aggressive tires that grip less on the street in wet and snowy weather
